Pam Prifysgolion?

Mae natur a phwrpas Prifysgol wedi bod yn destun sydd wedi digio a chynddeiriogi llawer ers i Cardinal Newman geisio ateb y cwestiwn bron i 200 mlynedd yn ôl.

Why Universities?

Ychydig iawn, fodd bynnag, sydd wedi ymateb mewn ffordd mor huawdl â Cardinal Newman: “A habit of mind is formed, which lasts through life, of which the attributes are, freedom, equitableness, calmness, moderation, and wisdom; or what I have ventured to call a philosophical habit. This then I would assign as the special fruit of the education furnished at a university”.

Heddiw mae’n rhaid i brifysgolion weithredu mewn marchnad ryngwladol, sy’n rhan o ddull cyllido sy’n trin myfyrwyr fel defnyddwyr. Mae Llywodraethau yn gofyn iddynt ddatrys rhai o faterion mwyaf anhydrin ein hoes, o newid hinsawdd i ddementia, o ddeallusrwydd artiffisial i gymorth i farw. Maent yn gweithredu mewn oes lle mae gormod o wybodaeth, a lle mae gwybodaeth yn cael ei rannu yn rhad ac ar unwaith. Mae prifysgolion sy’n ymfalchïo yn eu hunain am gynhyrchu gwybodaeth a’i brofi yn cynnig her unigryw ac anodd.

Serch hynny, mae’r “arferion athronyddol” yr oedd Cardinal Newman mor hoff ohonynt ac sydd wedi’i ymgorffori yn ein prifysgolion wedi profi’n fuddiol i bob agwedd ar fywyd dyn
Y llefydd lle mae’r cwestiynau caled yn cael eu gofyn, a’r atebion anghyfforddus yn cael eu darganfod yw’r llefydd gorau i fod. Lle mae amrywiaeth barn yn cael ei gymharu â syniadau yn cael eu profi; lle mae gwahaniaeth yn her ac yn cyfoethogi, lle mae’r gorffennol yn cael ei asesu a dyfodol gwell yn cael ei eni. Maent yn llefydd i dwf personol a lle mae newid cymdeithasol yn cael ei danio.

Yma, mae wyth o gyfranwyr yn myfyrio ar beth y maent wedi manteisio o Brifysgol Caerdydd, eu cymunedau a’r byd; pethau na ellir bob amser eu diriaethu, meintioli na’u categoreiddio – ond sydd, yn eu ffordd eu hunain, yn amhrisiadwy.

Why Universities?

Ever since Cardinal Newman sought to answer questions around the nature and purpose of a university nearly 200 years ago, the issue has continued to vex and, at times, enrage.

Why Universities?

Few, however, have been as eloquent as Cardinal Newman in their response: “A habit of mind is formed, which lasts through life, of which the attributes are, freedom, equitableness, calmness, moderation, and wisdom; or what I have ventured to call a philosophical habit. This then I would assign as the special fruit of the education furnished at a university”.

Today universities have to operate in an international market place, within funding mechanisms that treat students as consumers. Governments look to them to solve some of the most intractable issues of our age, from climate change to dementia, from the use of artificial intelligence to assisted dying.

They operate in an age of information overload, where knowledge is shared instantly and cheaply. For universities that pride themselves on generating knowledge and testing it, this poses a unique and difficult challenge.

Despite this, there is no area of human life that has not benefited from the “philosophical habit” so beloved by Cardinal Newman and so embedded in our universities.

The best are spaces where difficult questions are asked, and uncomfortable answers found. Where diverse opinions are compared and ideas tested; where difference is challenging and enriching; where the past is assessed and a better future made. They are places of personal growth and engines of social change. Here, nine contributors reflect on what Cardiff University brings to them, their communities and the world; things that can’t always be objectified, quantified or categorized – but are, in their own way, priceless.
