Trekking Wales’ highest mountain for cancer research
16 April 2024Bilal (Law 2023-) has set himself the challenge of climbing Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) – at night! As part of #TeamCardiff, his fundraising efforts will support cancer research at Cardiff University. Here, he tells us his motivations for joining the trek, and his advice for others looking to support life-changing research.
What inspired you to sign up for the trek and fundraise for Cardiff University’s cancer research?
During the height of COVID-19 and lockdown, one of my family members was diagnosed with colon cancer. Unfortunately, they caught it too late, as the cancer had metastasised. So that’s why signing up for this trek and fundraising for Cardiff University’s cancer research means a lot on a personal level, and I’m so glad to be a part of this.
How are you planning to train and fundraise over the next few months?
I’m quite active, I play football most weekends and hit the gym at least four times a week. That being said, cardio and I don’t see eye to eye. I would employ a mix of exercises, going on runs, hiking, and even cycling to train for the hike. By gradually increasing the intensity, I’d be more than prepared when it’s time to trek.
What are you most looking forward to about the trek?
I’m most looking forward to making friends. The bonds you make with people while climbing up a mountain are unmatched. Also, I’m always up for a challenge, and Snowdon will put my mental and physical limits to the test – so I’m all down for it.
How have your family and friends reacted to you joining the trek?
My mom was a bit sceptical about trekking overnight at first, but the second she learned about the cause we’re supporting, she couldn’t have been prouder.
What would you say to other Cardiff students thinking of signing up to the Yr Wyddfa challenge?
The memories you’d make are not to be missed. Imagine the stories you’d tell your kids about the day you trekked Snowdon overnight – who’s the cooler parent now?
