Jen Phillips (BA 1999)
11 May 2018Jen Phillips (BA 1999) studied Philosophy at the School of English, Communication and Philosophy and is now a Specialist Technical Underwriter for Legal & General.
I was particularly attracted to the course at Cardiff University because I was able to tailor it to suit my own particular interests, rather than having to take lots of compulsory modules.
I liked the University’s location near to the city centre and although there was a definite university area in the city, it wasn’t a campus miles out of town. It was also convenient for travel to and from my home town in Somerset.
I have so many good memories of my time at university: voting for the first time in the 1997 General Election and staying up all night watching the results come in; being part of the Gair Rhydd editorial team for three years and frequently working through the night to get everything pasted on to acetates and delivered to the printer on time; winning Feature Writer of the Year at the first ever Media Awards in 1999; meeting people from different backgrounds and different parts of the country/world.
After university I started work as an administrator at Legal & General. A year later I successfully applied for a role as a Medical Underwriter, then progressed through various roles within this department to my current position of Specialist Technical Underwriter.
Our business area assesses medical (and other) risks for Life Assurance, Critical Illness Cover and Income Protection Benefit products. My role includes training, coaching, communications, product development and providing a specialist perspective for various projects.
Philosophy taught me to think critically, assess different ways of approaching problems and rationalise risks, all of which are important skills in my current role. Studying medical ethics as part of my degree has also proved useful. Being part of the Gair Rhydd team developed skills in writing and design which have proved to be invaluable for communications at work.
If I was to give future students any advice I would say to make the most of your time at university and balance your time between studying and having fun. Get involved with societies that interest you and don’t be afraid to try something new. Be part of the wider local community. Student life doesn’t have to revolve around the Students’ Union, there are loads of brilliant places and activities to explore in Cardiff and further afield in South Wales.
Astudiodd Jen Phillips (BA, 1999) Athroniaeth yn yr Ysgol Saesneg, Cyfathrebu ac Athroniaeth ac erbyn hyn mae hi’n Arbenigwr Yswirio Technegol ar gyfer Legal & General.
Cefais i fy nenu’n benodol at y cwrs ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd oherwydd roedd modd i mi ei deilwra i gyd-fynd â fy niddordebau penodol fy hun, yn hytrach na gorfod cymryd llawer o fodiwlau gorfodol.
Roeddwn i’n hoff o leoliad y Brifysgol ger canol y ddinas, ac er bod gan y Brifysgol ardal benodol yn y ddinas, nid oedd y campws filltiroedd i ffwrdd o ganol dref. Roedd hefyd yn gyfleus ar gyfer teithio yn ôl ac ymlaen i fy nhref yng Ngwlad yr Haf.
Mae gen i gymaint o atgofion da o fy nghyfnod yn y Brifysgol: pleidleisio am y tro cyntaf yn Etholiad Cyffredinol 1997 ac aros ar ddihun drwy’r nos i wylio’r canlyniadau; bod yn rhan o dîm golygyddol Gair Rhydd am dair blynedd, a gweithio’n rheolaidd drwy’r nos i bastio popeth ar asetynnau a’u hanfon at yr argraffydd mewn pryd; ennill Awdur Ysgrifau Nodwedd y Flwyddyn yn nigwyddiad cyntaf erioed Gwobrau’r Cyfryngau ym 1999; cwrdd â phobl o wahanol gefndiroedd a gwahanol rannau o’r wlad/byd.
Ar ôl y brifysgol dechreuais weithio fel gweinyddwr yn Legal & General. Flwyddyn yn ddiweddarach fe wnes i gais am swydd fel Tanysgrifennwr Meddygol, yna gweithiais mewn nifer o wahanol rolau yn yr adran hon nes i mi gyrraedd fy swydd bresennol sef Arbenigwr Yswirio Technegol.
Mae ein maes busnes yn asesu risgiau meddygol (a rhai eraill) ar gyfer cynhyrchion Yswiriant Bywyd, Yswiriant Salwch Difrifol a Budd-daliad Diogelu Incwm. Mae fy rôl yn cynnwys hyfforddi, cyfathrebu, datblygu cynhyrchion, a chynnig safbwynt arbenigol ar gyfer nifer o wahanol brosiectau.
Drwy astudio athroniaeth dysgais i feddwl yn feirniadol, ac asesu gwahanol ffyrdd o wynebu problemau a rhesymoli risgiau, ac mae’r sgiliau hyn yn bwysig yn fy swydd bresennol. Roedd astudio moeseg meddygaeth fel rhan o fy ngradd yn ddefnyddiol hefyd. Drwy fod yn rhan o dîm Gair Rhydd datblygais sgiliau ysgrifennu a dylunio sydd wedi bod yn hynod werthfawr ar gyfer cyfathrebu ym myd gwaith.
Pe bawn i’n rhoi cyngor i fyfyrwyr y dyfodol byddwn i’n dweud bod angen manteisio i’r eithaf ar eich amser yn y brifysgol a gwneud yn siŵr bod gennych gydbwysedd rhwng astudio a chael hwyl. Cymerwch ran mewn cymdeithasau sydd o diddordeb i chi a pheidiwch â bod ofn rhoi cynnig ar rywbeth newydd. Byddwch yn rhan o’r gymuned leol ehangach. Nid oes rhaid i fywyd myfyrwyr gael ei gyfyngu i Undeb y Myfyrwyr, mae llawer o leoedd a gweithgareddau gwych yng Nghaerdydd a thu hwnt yn Ne Cymru.
