Michael Lydon (MA, 2015)
30 April 2018Michael Lydon (MA, 2015) is a Lecturer and Course Coordinator at the National University of Ireland, Galway. He studied his masters in Music, Culture and Politics at the School of Music.
The main reason I chose to study at Cardiff University was to work with distinguished academics from varying branches of the humanities who taught me during my MA in Music, Culture and Politics. In particular Dr Sarah Hill from the field of Popular Music Studies who acted as my supervisor.
I also chose to study at Cardiff University to experience moving to a new country where I enjoyed the vibrant energy that the city had to offer. My favourite part of living there was walking to the School of Music through the beautiful Bute Park, a place that still holds a special place in my memory today.
My time at Cardiff University has been incredibly beneficial to my success in that it instilled in me a passion for, and knowledge of, my research area. This passion and knowledge owes a great deal to the expert tutelage and mentorship of academic staff at Cardiff’s School of Music.
After graduating, I received a Doctoral Fellowship in Irish Music Studies from the National University of Ireland, Galway to undertake PhD research into my chosen field of Popular Music Studies.
At the National University of Ireland, I not only undertake research into Irish popular music but also teach an MA module of my own design ‘Popular Music and Ireland’. I also work as a Course Coordinator for an undergraduate course ‘Irish Life and Culture’, which involves bringing visiting students on a number of overnight field-trips around Ireland. This means that I am very busy most days, but I have the opportunity to undertake research that I’m passionate about and to share this passion with others.
If I was to offer advice to my past self about undertaking an MA course at Cardiff University, it would be to look into the scholarships available to incoming students. I would also encourage students to reach out to the academic staff at whatever department at Cardiff University you are enrolled at. From my own experience, I found a warm, highly informed academic faculty who were happy to impart their knowledge to others.
My lasting impression of Cardiff University, and in particular the School of Music, is that it was, and surely still is today, an exemplary place of learning nestled within one of the friendliest most vibrant cities in the United Kingdom.
Mae Michael Lydon (MA, 2015) yn Ddarlithydd ac yn Gydlynydd Cwrs ym Mhrifysgol Genedlaethol Iwerddon, Galway. Astudiodd ei gwrs Meistr mewn Cerddoriaeth, Diwylliant a Gwleidyddiaeth yn yr Ysgol Cerddoriaeth.
Y prif reswm pam y dewisais astudio ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd oedd er mwyn gweithio gydag academyddion nodedig o ganghennau amrywiol y dyniaethau a wnaeth fy addysgu yn ystod fy MA mewn Cerddoriaeth, Diwylliant a Gwleidyddiaeth. Yn benodol, Dr Sarah Hill o faes Astudiaethau Cerddoriaeth Boblogaidd fu’n fy ngoruchwylio.
Dewisais astudio ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd hefyd er mwyn cael profiad o symud i wlad newydd lle mwynheais awyrgylch bywiog y ddinas. Yr hyn wnes i ei fwynhau fwyaf am fyw yno oedd cerdded i’r Ysgol Cerddoriaeth drwy barc hardd Bute, rhywbeth sy’n parhau i fod yn atgof arbennig i mi hyd heddiw.
Mae fy nghyfnod ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd wedi bod o fudd mawr i fy llwyddiant gan mai yno y gwnes i feithrin fy angerdd at fy maes ymchwil a fy nealltwriaeth ohono. Arweiniad a mentoriaeth arbenigol staff academaidd Ysgol Cerddoriaeth Caerdydd sydd i’w cyfrif i raddau helaeth am yr angerdd a’r ddealltwriaeth hon.
Ar ôl graddio, cefais Gymrodoriaeth Ddoethurol mewn Astudiaethau Cerddoriaeth Boblogaidd Gwyddelig gan Brifysgol Genedlaethol Iwerddon, Galway, i ymgymryd ag ymchwil PhD yn fy maes dewisol o Astudiaethau Cerddoriaeth Boblogaidd.
Ym Mhrifysgol Genedlaethol Iwerddon, rwyf yn ymchwilio i gerddoriaeth boblogaidd Gwyddelig ac yn addysgu modiwl MA yr wyf wedi’i ddylunio fy hun, ‘Cerddoriaeth Boblogaidd ac Iwerddon’. Rwyf hefyd yn cydlynu cwrs israddedig ‘Bywyd a Diwylliant Gwyddelig’, sy’n cynnwys mynd â myfyrwyr o brifysgolion eraill ar nifer o deithiau dros nos o amgylch Iwerddon. Mae hyn yn golygu fy mod yn brysur iawn bron bob dydd, ond mae gennyf gyfle i ymgymryd ag ymchwil sy’n agos iawn at fy nghalon a rhannu fy angerdd gydag eraill.
Pe bawn yn gallu mynd yn ôl mewn amser a chynghori fy hun ynghylch ymgymryd â chwrs MA ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd, baswn yn sôn am yr ysgoloriaethau sydd ar gael i ddarpar fyfyrwyr. Byddwn hefyd yn annog myfyrwyr i gysylltu â’r staff academaidd ym mha bynnag adran ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd yr ydych wedi ymrestru ynddi. Roeddwn i mewn cyfadran academaidd groesawgar a hynod ddeallus oedd yn fodlon rhannu eu gwybodaeth ag eraill.
Fy argraff barhaol o Brifysgol Caerdydd, a’r Ysgol Cerddoriaeth yn benodol, yw ei bod yn lleoliad dysgu rhagorol yn un o’r dinasoedd mwyaf cyfeillgar a bywiog yn y Deyrnas Unedig, ac rwyf yn siŵr bod hynny’n wir o heddiw.
