Launch of the Glamorgan Building Alternative Audio Guide

On-Campus Intern, Poppy Gray, launched a new alternative audio guide on 26 March.
Learning and Teaching Academy staff, Kat Evans and Ela Pari Huws, recently attended the launch of a new audio guide to the Glamorgan Building. The launch gave us an opportunity to be amongst the first to experience an immersive guide, written and recorded by School of Social Sciences undergraduate student Poppy Gray. Poppy undertook the project as part of her On-Campus Internship project with the School of Social Sciences and the School of Geography and Planning, funded by the Learning and Teaching Academy.
Upon our arrival at the Glamorgan Building, we were provided with a QR code to scan, which took us to an audio tour video narrated by Poppy. The tour began outside the building before exploring the inside of the building – bringing our attention from sculptures to portraits and to artwork. The tour drew on interviews with staff and students reflecting on aspects of belonging, inclusion and identity. Although the space felt familiar, the guide showed us that there is a lot of history lurking in the parts of the building that have remained largely unchanged for over a century. Poppy’s guide encouraged us and other visitors and staff members to critically reflect on the decisions behind the design. It explored topics relating to the construction of space and encouraged us to consider the gendered, classed, and racialised heritage of the building.
After taking the audio tour around the building, we listened to a range of speakers and had a chance to give feedback on the tour and share ideas on the next steps.
