Ten years of global opportunities

This year marks a decade of Cardiff University’s Global Opportunities programme which has supported around 8,000 students to work, study or volunteer abroad.

The scheme gives students the chance to immerse themselves in a new culture and experience life in another country. Living abroad helps them develop transferable skills, build an international network, and cultivate a global perspective that prepares them for their future careers.

Over the years, many of our donors have generously supported the programme, making it possible for students to take part, regardless of their financial situation.

Camille Stanley (BA 2019) went to Canada to study marketing as part of the international Summer Programme. The experience helped her develop skills in a new subject area and prepared her for working overseas.

“My degree programme (English Language and Literature) didn’t include a year abroad, so I was grateful that Cardiff had summer study abroad opportunities. I was interested in learning more about marketing, as well as connecting with other international students. So I decided to do a marketing summer school programme at the University of British Colombia, Canada.

This involved spending seven weeks in Vancouver, living at the University, learning this new subject each day, as well as planned social activities with a group of international students who were studying various subjects. I made some great friends from around the world, and I got to see some incredible Canadian scenery.

Straight after graduating, I joined the civil service in an international marketing team. My time spent in Canada studying marketing helped me achieve this role.

I’ve recently moved to Belgium to work in a corporate partnerships and marketing and communications role at a business school. I now live close to some of the friends I made while studying abroad! I really believe that my time in Canada has helped me adapt to an international workplace.”
