Learning without barriers

Six ways to make your digital learning environment accessible and inclusive

In this blog, Marianna Majzonova from the Learning and Teaching Academy summarises what students want you to know about building inclusive online classrooms.

As we approach the 2025 Learning Central module rollover, we know how time-consuming and repetitive the setup process can be, especially if you manage multiple modules. That’s why the Learning and Teaching Academy has created the Module Set-Up Guide. It is a practical, step-by-step resource to help you prepare your modules for next year efficiently and confidently.

I’ve been working with Student Champions over the last year to improve our digital learning environment. One area I’m especially passionate about is accessibility and inclusion, and how these principles can transform the student experience.

Hear from Muskaan, BA Journalism, Media and English Literature Student, about her thoughts on accessible and inclusive Learning Central.

Key takeaways

  1. 1. Accessibility is the foundation
  • Provide lecture recordings with captions
  • Ensure materials are compatible with screen readers
  • Make content mobile-friendly and easy-to-access on all devices
  1. Flexibility supports learning
  • Allow students to learn at their own pace
  • Enable revisiting of materials anytime
  • Offer support without unnecessary barriers
  1. Clear and inclusive communication
  • Set clear expectations from the start
  • Use inclusive language and diverse examples
  • Offer multiple ways to engage. For example, set up discussion forums, polls, live Q&As, and one-to-one support.
  1. Representation matters
  • Curate course content that reflects diverse voices, histories, and cultures
  • Show commitment to inclusivity beyond accessibility
  1. Organised and consistent course structure
  • Clearly label weekly readings and materials.
  • Ensure links work and content is easy to navigate.
  • Maintain a consistent structure across modules in Learning Central
  1. Practical design makes a difference
  • Design with a wide range of students in mind.
  • Make students feel seen, supported, and valued.
  • Aim for a learning experience that is not just accessible but also rewarding.

An accessible and inclusive online learning environment is more than a checklist; it’s a mindset. It’s about designing digital spaces where every student feels they matter, regardless of their background, identity, or learning needs. When inclusion and accessibility are built in from the start, it sends out a powerful message to our students. It’s almost like saying You belong here. With time, students gain the freedom to learn in ways that work best for them.

I interpret inclusion as not just removing barriers, it’s about opening doors. It’s about designing with empathy, communicating with clarity, and continuously listening to our students who use these environments daily.
