Blackboard Ultra Frequently Asked Questions

27 August 2025

This blog has been written by Jordan Lloyd, from the Learning and Teaching Academy’s Digital Education team.

The Blackboard Ultra Frequently Asked Questions has been created by the Cardiff Learning and Teaching Academy to proactively address common concerns and act as a reliable, self-service resource for staff to find quick answers to their queries. It saves time and effort and builds trust and confidence in the Blackboard Ultra platform.

Our 10 most common queries cover a variety of topics, including pushing marks to gradebook, organising notification settings, and ensuring student access to Panopto. Each query has a short explanation, a step-by-step instructional video and a series of top tips on how to maximise your module.

Did you know?

One of most frequent queries is about file space and struggling to add more content, yet this has a simple solution.

Blackboard modules start with a 2GB storage quota. This quota applies to the overall content of the course within Blackboard. While the overall course quota is 2GB, individual file size uploads have a limit around 250MB.

If your module has reached the storage quota, there is a short two-part process to free up some space. This involves firstly finding and deleting unused files and then purging files from your course file repository.

From the homepage of your module, simply click the three-dot menu option (located in the central panel, aligned left) and click “Unused Files”.

The next page will show you a list of unused files. You can select those you wish to delete and remove them from your course, freeing up space on your module. To purge files from your module repository, the following microlearning video takes you through the simple process: Delete files from your Module Content Collection
