We’re Hiring! Join our Outreach Team as the Ogden Outreach Officer

An opportunity has arisen in the School of Physics and Astronomy to join a well-established outreach team as the Ogden Outreach Officer. This position is funded collaboratively by the Ogden Trust, Compound Semiconductor (CS) Hub and the School of Physics and Astronomy.

The Ogden Trust aims to increase the uptake of physics for all at post-16, particularly for those from under-represented groups, through support for schools, projects and programmes that are committed to enhancing physics teaching and learning. The CS Hub aims to establish the UK as the primary global research and manufacturing hub for compound semiconductor technologies.

The School of Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University is a friendly, approachable School with a strong commitment to teaching excellence and world class research in physics and astronomy. Research groups in the school include astronomy, gravitational waves, brain imaging and condensed matter & photonics.

The post-holder will assist in the design, delivery and dissemination of outreach activity relevant to the objectives of the above groups’ outreach strategies, ensuring clear lines of reporting and communication. The post-holder will support already existing outreach projects, such as the Physics Mentoring Project, as well as working with research groups to make their work accessible, such as attending exhibitions, coordinating events and visiting schools. Evaluation of activities will be reported to a range of stake-holders, and the post-holder will feed into the outreach strategy of the school of Physics and Astronomy.

As a member of a small team you will also provide general support to other areas of the School’s outreach, engagement and recruitment activities. The activities will relate to planning, coordination, development, delivery and evaluation, and will cover general physics and astronomy outreach as well as those linked to the broad range of cutting-edge research. You will be required to work effectively with other members of the School outreach team and liaise with other School, University and Ogden Trust staff as necessary, as well as with the teachers, students and members of the public with whom you interact.

The position is available immediately on fixed-term contract until 30 September 2021, full time. Work will largely take place within Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm, but a specific schedule can be flexible. Some evening and weekend working may be required for occasional events
