The best Christmas markets to visit from Cardiff

5 January 2024

As the festive period comes to an end, I want to reminisce on the best Christmas markets to visit for a day from Cardiff to inspire your 2024 Christmas market tour. The awkward period after the holidays but before the Spring can be a dark and stressful time, especially for students working towards their exams. Therefore, while the days slowly get lighter for longer, let me walk you through the best Christmas markets that I’ve visited from Cardiff this year to help inspire your 2024 plans.

Bath

Commonly considered among the best Christmas markets in the UK, Bath is well known for its festive stalls, lively atmosphere and wealth of activities. Only 1.5 hours from Cardiff, Bath is perfect for a festive day trip. We spent the day exploring the city, trying mulled wine and trying every free tester of everything from hot chocolate to perfume. With live street performers, an abundance of different stalls and Bath on Ice, for those brave enough to step onto the ice. The only downside is the huge crowds, due to the popularity of the market, making the travel more stressful (be prepared to stand) but it’s worth it to experience the market.

London

London is full of festive Christmas markets. Accessible for £30 round trip via coach from Cardiff, London is the ultimate festive day out. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is the ultimate Christmas hotspot, however, don’t forget other markets such as Covent Garden Christmas Markets, Southbank Centre Winter Market, and the notorious Borough Market with a Christmas twist. Finally, remember to visit Oxford Street and Bond Street to see the new lights display in 2024 while doing your Christmas stop-off at Selfridges. However, for your day out, keep the 4-hour one-way journey in mind by taking some snacks and headphones to make it easier.

Worcester’s Victorian Fayre

A night at the Victorian Fayre, Worcester

During the first weekend of December, the Victorian Fayre in Worcester is a must-see. This small historic city is filled to the boot for four days only with festive stalls, fake snow and individuals dressed up in Victorian-era costumes. Don’t miss the policemen on stilts, the classic fayre and cosy festive vibes at this cosy event. Worcester is a 2-hour train ride from Cardiff, making it perfect for day trips. Alternatively, the Student Union usually offer a day trip here via coach, advertised on their website closer to the time.

Closer to home!

Finally, don’t forget Cardiff’s own Winder Wonderland and festive stalls on The Hayes. Without the cost and effort of travelling, you can find an excellent Christmas market in Cardiff city centre. Get your Christmas shopping done at St Davids before heading to The Hayes to visit the endless stalls of food, drink and handmade goodies. After exploring the markets, try ice skating or visit the ice bar as part of Winter Wonderland (which you have to book in advance here). Finally, end your day with excitement by enjoying all the rides on the fayre on City Hall Lawns.
