Top Nine Best Venues in Cardiff for Music Lovers

4 October 2019

Cardiff is home to a number of fantastic music venues that cater to an array of tastes and genres. For those looking for a change to the standard night out, take a look at the cities’ best venues where you can sing and dance the night away.

  • The Globe

Cited as the hub of live music in Cardiff, The Globe has survived the epidemic of venue closures across the city, solidifying its status as an important centre for music and culture. A whole range of artists from Jess Glynne to Catfish and the Bottlemen have performed here, and with a capacity of just 350 people, you are guaranteed an intimate night of great tunes.

  • St David’s Hall

Host to a diverse range of shows to cater to every taste, St David’s Hall is the place to not only see comedians, ballet, and drag queens, but fantastic musical talents too. Classical, reggae, jazz and opera are just some of the music genres on offer here if you are looking to experience something a little different.

  • Tramshed

Another music and arts venue located in the city is Tramshed, a grade II listed building that once operated as a tram depot. With a capacity of 1000, here you can see an array of great bands, both current and classic, with your mates.

  • Clwb Ifor Bach

Otherwise known as Welsh Club, this rock club has primary focus on giving a platform to homegrown and local acts. This is a great option for those seeking a more alternative music scene where you get to witness the raw talent of up and coming artists. Welsh Club also operates as a nightclub and occasionally hosts comedians too.

  • The Motorpoint Arena

Another core venue for music is the Motorpoint Arena. This is mostly where you will get to see your typical pop artist acts and bands such as the 1975, James Arthur, Lewis Capaldi and Craig David just to name a few that are due to play here in the next year.

  • Principality Stadium

This list wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the largest music venue in town. Superstars such as Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran and the Rolling Stones have all performed here to crowds of almost 75,000 people. Although tickets to these events can be on the pricey side, the atmosphere makes for an amazing experience.

  • Live Lounge

A notorious favourite amongst students, Live Lounge offers live music from midday to midnight, every day of the week. After this, DJ’s then take over to pump out your favourite sing-a-longs until 4am. If you don’t hear Mr. Brightside at least once on a night here, you are not doing it right.

  • Cardiff Students Union

Cardiff uni’s very own SU is not just a nightclub on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but runs a number of great music events all year round. Artists such as NAS, Jack Savoretti and even Ed Sheeran have all played gigs here to crowds of admiring students.

  • The Moon

This non-profit bar and club is another ideal place to listen to some fantastic alternative artists. A bigger bonus is that fact tickets are between £4-10, meaning that its not only a cheap night out, but you will also be supporting one of Cardiff’s independent venues in the process!
