Discovering Local Histories: Delivering Welsh History in the New Curriculum for Wales

Under the new Curriculum for Wales, primary and secondary teachers are expected to embed Welsh history across schemes of work, but many lack the resources and confidence to do so. This project brought together historians, teachers and pupils to better understand these challenges and support the delivery of local history through a co-produced toolkit.

Within the Curriculum for Wales, primary school teachers are expected to embed Welsh history across schemes of work, but many lack the resources and confidence to do so. This project brought together historians, primary school teachers and pupils to better understand these challenges and support the delivery of local history through a co-produced toolkit, demonstrating how research can support the implementation of major curriculum reforms.

IAA funding enabled direct engagement with primary schools and supported a co-production process involving both teachers and pupils. This led to the development of a practical toolkit that has already influenced teaching practice and improved confidence, while positioning the project for follow-on funding, scaling across Wales and expansion into secondary education.
