Participants needed for Charity Shop Biographies Research Project
Charity shops play an important role in everyday life, contributing to a more circular economy and providing an invaluable space for community.
Our Cardiff University research project aims to further our understanding of these environments through interviews with charity shop volunteers, staff and donors about their experiences.
If you have worked in or donated to a charity shop, we would like to interview you for our research.
What will taking part involve?
- Interviews will last roughly 25-30 minutes and will primarily be conducted online over Teams. You’ll just need a phone or computer to take part, but please let us know if you need any alternative accommodations.
- We will ask you to share your experiences of working, volunteering, or donating
- Topics will focus on your experiences, accessibility, community, and the social importance of the charity shop sector

Interviews will be anonymous, and taking part is entirely your choice
What is the purpose of this research?
- Participation is entirely voluntary, but this is an important opportunity to make your voice heard!
- Our goal is to advance understanding of key issues in this area through publication of the research findings in a series of academic books, journals, and articles. We will also share our findings more widely via our blog and other public outlets.
- In doing so, we hope to shape the practice of industry, policymakers, government, and other figures of influence within the field.

This project, Charity Shop Biographies: Working and Donating Along the Life Course, is supported by the School of Journalism, Media and Culture at Cardiff University, which is funding two students as research assistants for the summer.
