When it comes to Cardiff University’s 10-week language course, I am a living testament to the value of perseverance and hard work. My journey to Cardiff began with a score gap, but it led to a bright future that has left an indelible mark on my academic and personal life.

The Initial Choice

I initially chose Cardiff University’s language course because my programme required an IELTS score of 7, and I had only achieved 6.5. While I didn’t meet the direct entry requirements, Cardiff University’s 10-week language course offered me a second chance, and I seized it with both hands. I conducted thorough research on the course details on the school’s official website and found two online and offline options. After careful consideration, I decided to enrol in the offline course. My reasoning was that it would not only help me bridge the language gap but also allow me to integrate into Cardiff’s academic life faster. Face-to-face interactions with teachers and classmates, as well as the opportunity to experience the beauty of this city first hand, were factors that weighed heavily in my decision.

Course Content

The course content in the language programme was meticulously designed to align with the final assessment methods. It primarily consisted of four crucial components:

  1. Seminars: These were interactive sessions where we engaged in discussions, explored various topics, and honed our speaking and listening skills. They fostered a dynamic learning environment that encouraged active participation.

  2. Presentations: For an introverted individual like me, presentations were initially an insurmountable challenge. However, the course provided comprehensive guidance and practice opportunities. With each presentation, my confidence grew, and I learned to speak in front of a diverse audience. This was a transformative experience that helped me overcome my fear of public speaking.
  3. Essay Writing: The programme emphasized developing strong writing skills. We tackled diverse writing tasks, from academic essays to creative compositions. The feedback and guidance from instructors were instrumental in refining our writing abilities.
  4. Listening, Reading, and Writing Tests: These comprehensive assessments gauged our language proficiency and understanding of academic content. The programme also offered a chance for a second examination for those who didn’t meet the requirements on the first attempt, ensuring that every student had a fair opportunity to excel.

The Support System

Cardiff University’s commitment to its language course students extended beyond the classroom. They had a dedicated support team in place to address any questions or concerns that may arise during classes. This support system was invaluable, providing students with a safety net and ensuring that we could navigate any challenges effectively.

Achievements and Growth

During the language course, I made remarkable progress both academically and personally. As an introverted individual, the journey from fearing presentations to becoming proficient at them was a significant achievement. I attribute much of this success to the unwavering support and guidance I received from my course tutor, Andrea. Her constructive feedback, encouragement, and personalized attention made all the difference. Each tutorial was a stepping stone toward improvement, and in the final class, Andrea expressed her happiness at my progress, which filled me with a profound sense of accomplishment.
