Cardiff is truly the place to be for all those foodies who are on a budget but don’t like to compromise on the quality and variety of food! While the entirety of Cardiff has some great food options, City Road, in particular, has a mind-blowing number of options that will leave you confused and yet, wanting more. So, after having lived there last year and visited it a LOT over the past years, I have compiled a list of must-trys for everyone:

1. Afrikana

As someone who hadn’t even tried African cuisine before coming over to the UK, I hadn’t really expected myself to fall in love with it and the biggest reason for that has to be this restaurant. The flavours and quality, especially of the meats, offered by this place are unmatched. However, it should be noted that Afrikana is inspired by African cuisine and might not be the most accurate replication of it. It has a wide menu which ranges between 9-15 pounds for a main but the quantity makes it worth every bite.

So, definitely give it a try if you head to City road because be it the beautiful, cosy interiors of this place or the warm service, you’ll be sure to like it!

2. Karak Chaii

If you are looking for some Indian snacks or drinks late at night, this is the place to check out! With a lot of cheap and delicious options, Karak Chaii is the best cafe/restaurant out there. The outlet itself is very pretty and aesthetically pleasing with a lot of space for multiple people, making it a great place to take your friends. Karak Chaii notably has a lot of vegetarian options and so, has become one of my favourites on City road. As for the drinks menu, I am a big fan of their Karak Chai and their lemonades so would recommend highly. Moreover, the fact that most things cost between 1-10 pounds is a major plus and ensures I get a good amount of food without breaking the bank.

As an Indian in the UK, this one feels even more comforting to me.

3. Tenkaichi

If, like me, you are looking to get some Japanese food without absolutely becoming broke, Tenkaichi’s an option to consider. I have tried multiple japanese places in Cardiff and the UK overall but Tenkaichi’s been the cheapest and most welcoming of them all. I would likely recommend trying out the Ramen dishes and the set menus/bento boxes that are offered here because they are extremely filling and worth the cost. The sushi in this place is addictively good but of course can be expensive so I would recommend splitting it with a friend and instead, trying one of the mains. While the outlet looks small and quiet, it is definitely worth a visit and I’d highly recommend getting a reservation before hand as it can get full quite quickly, especially during the weekends!

4. Chocoberry

For all the sweet tooths out there, I’d whole-heartedly recommend Chocoberry, another late night spot on City road. It’s open till 1am during the week and is open all 7 days! Chocoberry has to be one of the most aesthetic and pretty places on the street. Combining that with the amazing desserts and drinks offered by them, it’s impossible to resist it. The cookie doughs in particular are a personal favourite.

The place has a good variety of desserts and offers a good quantity but can be a bit pricey for certain items so I’d recommend going there if you have major sugar cravings!
