Activism is seen by some as a pillar of student life, historically student activism increased in the 1960s driving key sociopolitical changes such as civil rights in the US. By definition, activism is noticeable actions taken to reach a result, generally considered to be political or social and with the aim of the ‘greater good’ in mind. This can include fundraising, education, strikes, boycotts, protest art and demonstrations.

Societies at your Students Union

There are infinite opportunities to have a role in creating change while at university. One is through the many societies at Cardiff Student Union, created to make change. You can join these societies to stay up to date in areas that matter to you, educate others and meet people with similar interests. Great societies include the Amnesty International Society (which advocates for human rights), the Ethical and Environmental Association (which advocates for sustainable practices and reducing waste) and Students for Organ Donation (education and fundraising). There are many great societies available through your student’s union where you can campaign for things that are important to you in a collaborative way. If there isn’t something for you and your friends, you can always apply to Start a Society to begin your platform for your cause as part of the Student Union.

In addition, the students union’s efforts to engage students provide an opportunity to bring up matters of importance, such as environmental issues. Speak Week provides an opportunity to raise issues within the university for change and your elected officers are a year-round point fo contact for you to reach out to about pivotal issues.

Activism in Cardiff

Cardiff is a place for peaceful activism. It is common to come across demonstrations around the city, specifically in Central Square (outside Cardiff Central Railway Station), by Cardiff Central Library and by The Senedd (the Welsh Parliament building in Cardiff Bay). As the Welsh Capital, people travel far to attend demonstrations for causes important to them at the Welsh Parliament. Activism happens all the time, whether for peace, pay rises, the environment or more. You can find some of the activists’ efforts in Cardiff here.

In all, Cardiff is a great place to come to be at the heart of grassroots activism for causes that matter. With endless ways to get involved through the university, and living in the heart of a capital city, you can find your passions and learn from or take part in activism efforts around the university and the city during your time at university.
