Your experience abroad

Tell us about your global opportunity—where did you go, and what did you do?
I went to Prague in the Czech Republic at Charles University where I studied Politics and International relations. However I was able to choose a range of courses including some masters level classes and participate in engaging guest lecturers.

What surprised you the most about your host country/programme/time abroad?

How friendly all the other exchange students were, everyone I met was just as friendly and excited to meet new people and learn about different cultures, as I was. It made making friends so much easier knowing we were all in the same boat. I was also surprised at what the city had to offer beyond its tourist attractions, like free events in the parks and incredible independent shops with the nicest owners. There was always something new and exciting to find everyday I was there.

What is the one thing you miss about your time abroad?
I particularly miss being able to spontaneously travel to another country I had never been to before at minimal cost. Since the Czech Republic was so central we managed to travel to so many different countries just by bus. And as I was a part of Erasmus they had so many opportunities to go on organised trips both in and out of the country. What I miss most about Prague specifically is the city itself, from its beauty to its beer, it really was just a captivating place that I was so lucky to experience for an entire year. When I go back to visit and meet up with friends there will still be more to explore.

A bit about you!

What’s something you’re passionate about outside of your studies?
Textiles/ fashion, films and reading.

What’s your favourite place on campus/in Cardiff?
The National Museum

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year (a dream destination), where would it be—and why?
New York, Vancouver or the South of France, completely depends on how I feel and what season it is.

What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?
I have had my shoes stolen twice.

Reflections and Advice

Describe your global experience in three words
Entertaining, fulfilling and engaging

What advice would you give to students considering a global opportunity?
Research everything, especially accommodation to make sure where you are going is a fit for you. And take a risk and do it scared – it pays off.
