Your experience abroad

Tell us about your global opportunity—where did you go, and what did you do?
I spent two weeks in Siem Reap, Cambodia, volunteering through GreenLion and IVHQ as an English teacher in a local primary school. I taught children aged 8–12 basic English through lessons and games, helping to improve their confidence in speaking and spelling. I also explored Cambodia’s culture and history by visiting Angkor Wat, Battambang and the Killing Caves.

What surprised you the most about your host country/programme/time abroad?

What surprised me most was how quickly I became confident teaching. I was nervous on my first day, but within two weeks I was comfortable leading lessons and adapting activities to different abilities. I was also surprised about the respect culture in Cambodia with people being so pleased to have tourists return to their country.

What is the one thing you miss about your time abroad?
I loved how welcoming and friendly everyone was, particularly the children I taught. I miss the energy of the classroom, the smiles and laughter, and seeing the children become more confident each day.

A bit about you!

What’s something you’re passionate about outside of your studies?
I enjoy playing rugby as well as being part of the university’s officer training corps alongside my studies.

What’s your favourite place on campus/in Cardiff?
The Centre for Student Life

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year (a dream destination), where would it be—and why?
I would like to live in Vancouver, as there is a perfect mix of city life, watersports and skiing in the winter. As well as having some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met.

What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?
I have a fear of spiral staircases
