DiSTEM Mission Statement

DiSTEM stands for Diversity in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. The DiSTEM group is primarily run by members from the Schools which are part of Cardiff University’s College of Physical Sciences and Engineering. DiSTEM is an empowering, educational and networking space to support PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, professional services, outreach and academic staff, and sometimes also offers careers-based events open to undergraduates. DiSTEM runs a few female-only events throughout the year, aimed at giving female staff and PhD students a safe space to talk. These events are targeted specifically towards women in order to meet a specific need or gap. At these events, we welcome trans women and non-binary people who see themselves as partially or sometimes identifying with this gender and feel they would benefit from accessing a women-centred space. Majority of our lunchtime sessions are open to all allies of our cause. As such, we welcome anybody supporting disadvantaged groups in challenging the systemic inequalities faced in their careers and on a daily basis. Our sessions cover broad topics about equality, diversity and inclusivity.
