Antarctic Odyssey – empowering women leaders in STEMM for Environmental Conservation

2 April 2024
A group of people in Antarctica

Come and celebrate EARTH Day on 22nd April 2024 with an inspiring talk of a leadership course for women in STEMM with a difference!

Last November, with 99 other female scientists from around the globe, Dr Debatri Chattopadhyay embarked on an exhilarating journey to Antarctica as part of the Homeward Bound leadership program. This voyage not only showcased the fusion of diversity in STEMM but also served as a vivid encounter with the urgent realities of climate change. Navigating through unexpected weather challenges, our expedition became a testament to resilience and innovation in the face of environmental adversity. Amidst the breathtaking scenery of Antarctica, we delved into emergent leadership strategies and collaborative problem-solving, fostering a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between humanity and our planet. Debatri will share her insights and reflections, igniting a vibrant dialogue on the intersection of diversity, environmental stewardship, and the future of STEMM on Earth Day.
Debatri Chattopadhyay is an astrophysicist with a passion for unravelling the mysteries of the cosmos. She specializes in the formation and dynamics of compact binary systems, including black holes and neutron stars, within diverse astrophysical environments. As a Cardiff University alumna, she embarked on a transformative journey to Antarctica as part of the Homeward Bound leadership program, celebrating Earth’s beauty while advocating for environmental stewardship. Her experiences underscore the urgent need for diverse perspectives in STEMM fields and collective action to address climate change. With a commitment to promoting diversity and advancing scientific understanding, Debatri continues to inspire others through her research, advocacy, and leadership endeavours.

Dewch i ddathlu Diwrnod y Ddaear ar 22 Ebrill 2024 gyda sgwrs ysbrydoledig am gwrs arweinyddiaeth i fenywod mewn STEMM gyda gwahaniaeth!

Fis Tachwedd diwethaf, gyda 99 o wyddonwyr benywaidd eraill o bob cwr o’r byd, dechreuodd Dr Debatri Chattopadhyay ar daith gyffrous i Antarctica fel rhan o raglen arweinyddiaeth Homeward Bound. Roedd y daith hon nid yn unig yn arddangos yr ymasiad o amrywiaeth mewn STEMM ond hefyd yn gyfarfyddiad byw â realiti brys newid yn yr hinsawdd. Gan lywio drwy heriau annisgwyl yn y tywydd, daeth ein taith yn dyst i wytnwch ac arloesedd yn wyneb adfyd amgylcheddol. Yng nghanol golygfeydd syfrdanol Antarctica, aethom ati i ymchwilio i strategaethau arweinyddiaeth sy’n dod i’r amlwg a datrys problemau cydweithredol, gan feithrin dealltwriaeth ddyfnach o’r berthynas gymhleth rhwng dynoliaeth a’n planed. Bydd Debatri yn rhannu ei mewnwelediadau a’i myfyrdodau, gan danio deialog fywiog ar groesffordd amrywiaeth, stiwardiaeth amgylcheddol, a dyfodol STEMM ar Ddiwrnod y Ddaear.

Debatri Chattopadhyay yn astroffisegydd sydd ag angerdd am ddatrys dirgelion y cosmos. Mae hi’n arbenigo mewn ffurfio a dynameg systemau deuaidd cryno, gan gynnwys tyllau du a sêr niwtron, o fewn amgylcheddau astroffisegol amrywiol. Fel cyn-fyfyriwr ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd, cychwynnodd ar daith drawsnewidiol i Antarctica fel rhan o’r rhaglen arweinyddiaeth Homeward Bound gan ddathlu harddwch y Ddaear wrth eiriol dros stiwardiaeth amgylcheddol. Mae ei phrofiadau yn tanlinellu’r angen brys am safbwyntiau amrywiol ym meysydd STEMM a gweithredu ar y cyd i fynd i’r afael â newid yn yr hinsawdd. Gydag ymrwymiad i hyrwyddo amrywiaeth a hyrwyddo dealltwriaeth wyddonol, mae Debatri yn parhau i ysbrydoli eraill trwy ei gwaith ymchwil, eiriolaeth ac ymdrechion arweinyddiaeth.
