CILM Launch Event

17th April 2024

A presentation commemorating the formal launch of the centre and a panel Q&A discussion with guest speakers. The overarching theme of the panel discussion is ‘challenges to the rules-based international order in the twenty-first century.‘ Panellists will include a diplomat and multilateralist who will examine this issue from the multilateral political dimension, and an international lawyer who will explore this from the standpoint of international law. A catered reception with a range of food and drinks will follow the talks during which guests may network with one another, our panellists, and the Centre Directors.

‘AUKUS Submarines and the Law of the Sea’ with Professor Donald Rothwell (Australian National University)

09th April 2024

Since AUKUS was announced in 2021 there have been multiple diplomatic and political developments that have advanced the trilateral military partnership between Australia, the UK and the US. Some legal issues have also been flagged that may prove troublesome for Australia and the UK. First, Australia’s Southeast Asian neighbours have raised concerns over AUKUS submarines navigating through their waters, suggesting that traditional freedoms of navigation may be constrained. Second, Australia’s Pacific neighbours have raised concerns over whether AUKUS submarines are consistent with Australia’s obligations under the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty. These legal issues will be assessed, including consideration of possible Australia and UK responses.

‘Russia. War. Europe.’ Book talk by Dr Luigi Lonardo (University College Cork)

23rd February 2023

This lecture is based on Dr Lonardo’s recent book, ‘Russia’s 2022 War Against Ukraine and the Foreign Policy Reaction of the EU’. The book discusses the historical and ideological context of the war, from the Tsarist era to the present day, the events of the war itself, and the resulting effects on the external relations and institutional evolution of the EU. At this critical moment in the war, Dr Lonardo’s presentation will focus on the maturation under extreme pressure of the EU into a full player in global power politics.
