  • Senate had been advised of the appointment of Professor Kim Graham as PVC Research, Innovation and Enterprise from 1 September 2018.
  • The Vice-Chancellor had attended the Russell Group meeting at which issues with match funding requirements were raised.
  • There had been some recent Twitter activity in relation to the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), it was agreed that a paper on signing of the agreement would come to the next UEB.
  • It was noted that the College of Physical Science and Engineering had held a successful College Symposium involving seven international speakers.
  • It was noted that Professor James Hegarty had been appointed as Head of the School of History, Archaeology and Religion from 1 September 2018.
  • UEB received a paper on the REF impact exercise that had taken place on 14-15 March 2018 to review the development of the University’s impact case studies in preparation for submission to REF 2021.
  • UEB received a paper on developing a strategic partnership with the University of Campinas (Universidade Estadual de Campinas) or UNICAMP in Brazil. The proposal was endorsed and will be presented to Senate.
  • UEB received and approved for submission the University’s draft response to the UK Department for Education consultation on implementation of Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework at Subject Level.
  • UEB received the draft Student Written Submission.
  • UEB received UEB/College/Professional Services risk register that now incorporated the Brexit register. A number of amends were made and this will now go on to Policy and Resources Committee.
  • UEB received the business case for the expansion of the Welsh School of Architecture. Full investment in support of the expansion of the School was endorsed and the case will now go to Policy and Resources Committee.
  • UEB received the Physical Learning Spaces Programme interim report. It was agreed that before and after photographs of the refurbished spaces should be included and that this will now go to Policy and Resources Committee.
  • UEB received a paper reassuring members that following the adoption of the Cardiff’s Funders’ Rights document to ensure compliance with the Fundraising Regulator’s Code of Fundraising Practice, no complaints had been received about Cardiff University fundraising.
  • UEB received the Compound Semiconductor Centre progress report. The condolences of UEB to the family of Mr Phillip Rasmussen, IQE Finance Director, who had recently died in a cycling accident were noted.  Progress to date and changes to the Board were noted.  A review and update of the business plan would take place over the summer.
  • UEB received the draft Policy and Resources Committee agenda for note.
  • UEB received the draft Senate agenda for note.
  • UEB received the draft Governance Committee agenda for note.
