It's party time – A Fresher's Guide to Cardiff Clubbing
8 Awst 2013Hi all!
So by now a lot of you will be waiting on results and thinking about moving to Cardiff. There are probably many things you’re thinking about…but I can pretty much guarantee one of these things will be Fresher’s week. So in light of this, I thought i’d give you an brief low down on what’s good and where to go, ready to prep you in time for one of the craziest weeks of your life! Please note that I am VERY mainstream and there are a number of more alternative options not mentioned here. If you want to know more, just comment below or drop me a message on facebook 🙂 Happy Clubbing – oh and I should probably just say: Drink Responsibly – because some of the things you may see on a night out ain’t pretty ;P
The Union
As you may or may not already know, Cardiff’s incredible union does in fact contain a nightclub – Solus. I have to say some of my absolute favourite nights out have been here. I absolutely LOVE the union!
Just to give you a bit of a teaser – Check this out: Official Solus Trailer
So Monday nights – Ctrl ‘Alt’ Del – The union’s alternative night, which has the widest varieties of music including indie, rock, hip hop, ska, punk, dub step, electro and much more. ‘Control the Alternative sound and Delete the mainstream!’
Wednesday nights – THE LASH – In my opinion, the best night EVER!!! Playing the best Chart, Electro, R&B and a dirty little bit of Dubstep all mixed by our phenomenal resident DJ, Scott Kirby. PLUS free giveaways, drink offers and a theme every week. What more could you possibly want?!
Saturday nights – Comeplay – Very similar to The Lash…juuust without the themes, and giveaways. Still incredibly awesome though. And significantly cheaper than town!
Freshers week is particularly crazy, as you can see from the trailer….we got foam parties, UV parties, dunk tanks, interactive dance floors, silent discos. The list goes on…
….Not to mention of course the numerous gigs! Wanna find out what’s coming up this year? It’s all here, including Ellie Goulding, Tom Odell and Bastille http://www.ents24.com/cardiff-events/cardiff-university-su-the-great-hall-solus-cf10-the-taf
The Student Nights
Although the union is incredible, i know you’re not going to want to spend every night there. So here’s a quick list of where’s good to go in town:
Monday – Tiger Tiger Cardiff (Playing R’n’B, Charts, 70’s & 80’s Classics as well as having karaoke pods and a tiki cocktail bar) or Glam (as seen on the Valleys)
Tuesday – Vodka Revolution (One of THE BEST nights out you will EVER have – Expect to find the ultimate mix of party tunes and classics, upfront Dance, Funk, Soul & Electro with good a measure of Chart and RNB…)
Wednesday – The LASH, or Revs again
Thursday – Walkabout (The Australian Bar – again similar to the above all the party classics, RNB, chart…pure mainstream lushness)
Friday – Soda Bar (An epic dosage of House 😀 make sure you get there in good time, and that you won’t get thirsty because it gets packed! and you may have to queue for a fair time for a drink) and Probably Glam again
Saturday – Gotta be ComePlay in the Union unless you wanna be vastly outnumbered by non-students in town
Sunday – Ladybird Lounge (a beautiful and sometimes messy way to end the week, or start the next, however you want to see it)…best thing is, it’s joined to Kapu – a gorgeous cocktail bar…make sure you try their bountiful or tropical cocktails – some of the best i’ve tasted
ANY DAY OF THE WEEK – Live Lounge! One of the BEST places ever. Open til 4. Very casual and not pretentious…every one loves a bit o’ Live Lounge. Cheap drinks, great music, relaxed atmosphere, late night…what more do you need?
The Gay District
The Kings – a small almost pub-like feel to start out your night. With regular karaoke night, always a feel good night out
Wow Bar – A designer gay bar and club, often with live entertainment. The Drag Queens are always a hoot and ready to show you how to have a crazy evening
Pulse – THE Gay clubbing place to be. What else needs to be said?
So there we have it. A Fresher’s Guide to Cardiff Clubbing. You do of course have numerous other pubs and bars to start off your night – such as the classic student pub: The Woodville. Or there’s The George, The Mackintosh, Lloyd’s Bar….i’m sure you’re good at exploring 😉
One last piece of advice is to buy the Fresher’s wristband the union offer. You’ll save a tonne of money and you’ll have access to all the best things the union has to offer.
Remember, be safe and Happy Clubbing!
