Your experience abroad

Tell us about your global opportunity—where did you go, and what did you do?
I went to work at a summer camp for two months as a camp counsellor in Thompson, Pennsylvania. My role was a general counsellor so it involved me living in the bunk with 12 children and 4 other counsellors. On a day to day basis I would get the kids ready for the day, take them to activities and be someone they could go to if they had any issues or needed support.

What surprised you the most about your host country/programme/time abroad?
I think what surprised me the most was the culture in the US. A lot of the time i felt like I was in a film because a summer camp doesn’t really exist in the UK, so the concept of waking up to a bugle was interesting.

What is the one thing you miss about your time abroad?
I miss the other counsellors that I met, you become so close with people so quickly because you are constantly with them. I met people from Australia, New Zealand and all over the UK so I definitely miss not seeing them every day.

A bit about you!

What’s something you’re passionate about outside of your studies?
I am very passionate about travelling. I travelled after my time at camp and I had the best time, this is definitely something I would like to do more of.

What’s your favourite place on campus/in Cardiff?
Bute Park

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year (a dream destination), where would it be—and why?
My dream destination would probably be New Zealand, everyone I’ve met from there is so friendly and I also just think it’s really beautiful so I would love to live there.

What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?
I still have a baby tooth.

Reflections and Advice

Describe your global experience in three words
unforgettable, fun, friendship

What advice would you give to students considering a global opportunity?
I would say just do it, even if you are nervous or apprehensive. I never would have thought I would be able to do something like this but I am so glad I did and I have no regrets so just take a chance!
