We held our ninth Europe Day Quiz on Monday 9 May – the first time for a number of years when the quiz actually took place on the officially designated Europe Day.

Ian Thomson welcomes the participants.

Ten teams took part in this light-hearted but highly competitive annual challenge testing people on their knowledge of all things European. Experienced question master Frederico Rocha had researched forty questions under the themes of Geography, People and culture, Sport and cuisine, and European politics. There was also a picture round revolving around the flags of European countries.

A sample question from each round gives you a flavour:

  • Geography: Which countries share a border with Poland?
  • People and culture: Which cities hold the title of European Capital of Culture in 2016?
  • Sport and cuisine: The first edition of the European Games, a multi-sport event, was held in 2015. Where did it take place?
  • European politics: Which EU country was the last to join the Eurozone, on 1 January 2015?

Interestingly, the weakest knowledge was in the round concerning European politics!

This year we were pleased to welcome among the participants 18 librarians and documentalists from the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Turkey, who are visiting Cardiff this week on the Erasmus@Cardiff University Libraries Staff Development Programme.
