Europe Day Quiz, May 2015

The eighth Europe Day Quiz was held on 7 May 2015 at the Cardiff EDC. Twelve teams took part, composed of students, academic and administrative staff from Cardiff University as well as members of the local community, including a team from the FAN Charity.

The questions covered the themes of geography, people and culture, cuisine and sport, and European politics, plus a picture round. Examples included:

  • In which European capital city was registered the hottest day ever in Europe?
  • Which European nationality forms the biggest foreign community in Iceland?
  • What is the name of the film which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film 2014?
  • How many breweries can be found in Belgium?
  • How many female Prime Ministers do we currently find in the European Union?

For the second year Frederico Rocha was our question master. Frederico also had the challenging task of creating the questions to test our diverse teams, while Ceri Thomas designed the picture round. Together they succeeded very well in achieving the right balance of enjoyment and challenge.

After a hard fought contest the winning team was announced. Team members Marcin Borys, Agnieszka Stawiarska (Erasmus+ exchange students from Poland in Law and Politics), Liam Barrett (undergraduate in Modern Languages) and Michał Czop (undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering) were each presented with a Europe Direct goody bag and a bottle of wine. They scored 38 out of a possible 60. The second team scored 37 points and two teams shared third place with 35 points.

Thanks to our current full time interns Elisa Patassa and Lisa Kleiber for helping us with the organisation and smooth running of the event, and to a number of our current part time interns, Kim, Giuliana, Carlos, Laura, Julius and Michał for helping us to tidy up very quickly at the end of the evening, so that we could reopen as a study centre for students revising for exams.
