It has been a busy few months and there is lots of news to share…

Environmental Politics Post Advertised

The School of Law and Politics is advertising several new posts, including in the field of Environmental Politics. This is a great opportunity to join our EJRU team, and we’d be particularly interested in receiving applications from those working in global environmental politics, environmental justice, sustainable development, political economy of the environment and environmental governance more broadly. If you’d like to find out more about the posts please email myself (hughesh8@cardiff.ac.uk) or the Head of Politics and International Relations (GruffyddJonesB@cardiff.ac.uk).

GEP Methods Workshop at Berkeley University

The event that I have been most focused on over the last few months has been a workshop co-organised with Alice Vadrot and Kimberley Marion Suiseeya on The Power of Environmental Agreement Making. The event was hosted by Berkeley University thanks to the support of Professor Kate O’Neill and funding provided by the School of Law and Politics Research Support Scheme, and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). This was a workshop designed to bring together scholars that are experimenting with conceptual and methodological innovations in order to illuminate the process of global environmental agreement making. It followed on from a previous GEP methods workshop hosted here in Cardiff and a panel and roundtable event at the International Studies Association Annual Conference in Baltimore last year.

It was a great workshop: Identifying how systems thinking can help join up study sites (Jonathan Pickering); Challenging how we think about intergovernmental expert bodies (Hannah Hughes and Alice Vadrot); Providing insights into how ethnographic research can be adapted for GEP purposes (Kimberley Marion Suiseeya and Laura Zanotti) and; Identifying the rich potential for data collection that conference sites offer for Social Network Analysis (Matthew Paterson). Each paper received excellent questions and feedback from our discussants (Kate O’Neill, Peter Haas, Jonas Meckling and Ana Mauad), and the authors will now revise and prepare their papers to submit for review as a special section in Global Environmental Politics.

Forthcoming Events

May is a busy month for us, with two forthcoming events. On the 1st of May, Lorenzo Marvulli will be presenting his PhD research to the group, which included a year-long ethnographic study of DEFRA. Then on the 9th, David Ciplet will be joining us as our video-speaker, presenting his brilliant co-authored book Power in a Warming World (David Ciplet, J. Timmons Roberts and Mizan R. Khan).
