{"id":8,"date":"2021-11-05T11:22:04","date_gmt":"2021-11-05T11:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/wolfsonyoungpeople\/?p=8"},"modified":"2022-04-13T13:37:31","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T13:37:31","slug":"meet-the-researcher-dr-chris-eaton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/wolfsonyoungpeople\/meet-the-researcher-dr-chris-eaton\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the Researcher: Dr Chris Eaton"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The Wolfson Centre\u00a0has welcomed\u00a0a new research associate, who\u00a0will work across the Centre and Welsh Government.<\/h3>\n<p>Dr\u00a0Chris\u00a0Eaton, who joined the team in March 2021,\u00a0will work across the Centre and Welsh Government, to ensure the Centre\u2019s research is informed by\u00a0government\u00a0policy priorities for youth mental health, and in turn that\u00a0the Centre\u2019s\u00a0research can contribute to national policy development and evaluation in this area.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Eaton completed his PhD\u00a0at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/mrc-centre-neuropsychiatric-genetics-genomics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MRC CNGG<\/a>\u00a0in 2019. Following postdoctoral positions in Birmingham and Edinburgh, Chris has returned to the\u00a0Division of\u00a0Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences\u00a0and is already looking forward to getting work underway at the Centre.<\/p>\n<p>His broader research interests include exploring the prevalence of, and risk factors for mental health problems in children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental outcomes such as autism, intellectual disability and epilepsy. Chris is particularly interested in better understanding the signs and symptoms of depression in young people with neurodevelopmental disorders and how best to assess and treat depression in these children and adolescents.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Meet the Researcher- Dr Chris Eaton\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8a3robsH2Ks?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dr Eaton said,\u00a0\u201cPoor mental health in young people is associated with negative outcomes across many different areas of their lives. Research into the causes of mental health problems in children and adolescents is vital, as are studies that explore how we can best prevent and treat these difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch into these areas is particularly important given the huge disruption and changes young people have experienced over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0The Wolfson Centre is focused on undertaking research to better understand the risk factors for youth depression and anxiety, outcomes associated with these disorders and how best to support and improve youth mental health. I\u2019m excited about contributing to\u00a0the Centre\u2019s important planned work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne\u00a0of the key challenges,\u201d\u00a0Dr Eaton continued,\u00a0\u201cis how we promote good mental health in young people from an early age and build resilience.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We need to ensure we focus on prevention, in order to minimise the number of young people who develop severe mental health difficulties.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;In recent years, there\u2019s been a real societal shift\u00a0toward a greater recognition that mental health difficulties are not a weakness or something to be ashamed of. This is important for allowing young people experiencing mental health problems to seek help and get the care they need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy role working across the Wolfson Centre and Welsh Government will help ensure the research coming from the Centre can contribute to step-change in youth mental health policy and that it has direct relevance to the lives of young people who experience mental health problems.
