{"id":369,"date":"2022-03-08T09:05:20","date_gmt":"2022-03-08T09:05:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/wolfsonyoungpeople\/?p=369"},"modified":"2022-04-13T13:37:28","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T13:37:28","slug":"celebrating-international-womens-day-%e2%99%80%ef%b8%8f","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/wolfsonyoungpeople\/celebrating-international-womens-day-%e2%99%80%ef%b8%8f\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating International Women&#8217;s Day \u2640\ufe0f"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Today is International Women&#8217;s Day, a global day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world.<\/h3>\n<h3>The Wolfson Centre for Young People\u2019s Mental Health is fortunate to have a diverse and inclusive team of fantastic women working across the research centre.<\/h3>\n<p>This International Women\u2019s Day, we wanted to shine a spotlight on some of the wonderful women based here at the Wolfson Centre and highlight how women are supporting the Centre to flourish.<\/p>\n<h2>World-leading experts<\/h2>\n<p>Four of the Wolfson Centre\u2019s six research workstreams are led by female academics who are internationally recognised experts in their fields.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Frances Rice<\/strong> is the co-director of the Wolfson Centre and her work focuses on studying the origins and development of depression and anxiety in young people. As well as being a Principal Investigator for the research centre, Frances also leads the centre\u2019s workstream which seeks to develop interventions to support young people whose parent suffers from depression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"LC20lb MBeuO DKV0Md\">\ud83c\udfa5 Watch Frances\u2019s most recent public talk on interventions that work well for young people in school settings.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"School-based interventions to support young people\u2019s mental health\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fx2w6MfZbX4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Anita Thapar<\/strong> is a highly esteemed clinician-scientist who leads the Wolfson Centre\u2019s genetics research workstream. Anita also heads the academic Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Section in the Division of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences at Cardiff University.<\/p>\n<p>Anita\u2019s research focuses on adolescent depression, attention hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and additional neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. autism spectrum disorder) from 0 to 25 years, addressing questions that have clinical relevance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"LC20lb MBeuO DKV0Md\">\ud83d\udc40 Catch up on Anita\u2019s public lecture during the Wolfson Centre\u2019s virtual launch where she was a keynote speaker.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Young people&#039;s mental health in the 21st century: lessons from research\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6nDpbnRJyOs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Ann John<\/strong> works on the Wolfson Centre\u2019s population and patient e-data cohort research workstream. Ann\u2019s research team, based in Swansea University, use information uniquely available in Wales to better understand the long-term outcomes of those young people who experience anxiety and depression.<\/p>\n<p>Ann, a public health trained former GP, is a Professor of Public Health and Psychiatry at Swansea University Medical School and is Principal Investigator and Co-Director of DATAMIND, \u00a0Health Data Research Hub for Mental Health. Supporting the development of researchers at various levels of their careers is vitally important.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-387 media-387\" class=\"image align-none\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/wolfsonyoungpeople\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/586\/2022\/03\/jason-goodman-4-iZ147pSAE-unsplash-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"337\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>The original content below, created in partnership with the women academics who feature, showcases just some of the inspiring women the Wolfson Centre is lucky enough to support and help develop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Yulia Shenderovich and Dr Lucy Riglin<\/strong> co-lead the Centre\u2019s overarching workstream which focuses on ensuring our teams are well-trained in research methods and open science practices.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this work, Yulia and Lucy are also setting up the Wolfson Centre\u2019s own public lecture series which will be launching in April of this year- more details on the series will be coming very soon!<\/p>\n<p>Yulia was recently featured in a<em> Meet the Researcher<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/wolfsonyoungpeople\/meet-the-researcher-dr-yulia-shenderovich\/\">blog post<\/a> where you can learn more about her research interests.<\/p>\n<p>Our <em>Learn in 5<\/em> video series has also featured research associates based at the Wolfson Centre and again offers the opportunity to highlight the work women researchers are undertaking in their respective fields. <em>Learn in 5<\/em> aims to introduce key findings from an area of youth mental health research or study in under five minutes<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/MA52qiPOJK0\">ADHD in adults with recurrent depression<\/a> \u2013 \ud83c\udf7f\u00a0<strong>Dr Victoria Powell<\/strong>, Research Associate<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/AoZCUteQhr8\">Depression trajectories in young people<\/a> \u2013 \ud83c\udf7f <strong>Bryony Weavers<\/strong>, Wolfson PhD student<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"post-377 media-377\" class=\"image align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 538px;height: 303px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/wolfsonyoungpeople\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/586\/2022\/03\/Learn-in-5-Vicky-ADHD-and-recurrent-depression.png\" alt=\"Wolfson Centre Learn in 5 video\" \/><\/figure>\n<h2>Working behind the scenes<\/h2>\n<p>A research centre the size and breadth of the Wolfson Centre needs a strong support team working behind the scenes to support the wide-reaching activity taking place.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre is supported by the work of an all-female <strong>Professional Services team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Angharad Jones is Centre Manager, Emma Meilak is Administration Officer and I, Becs, disseminate and promote the Wolfson Centre\u2019s research in my role as Communications Officer.<\/p>\n<p>The three of us support the day-to-day running of the Wolfson Centre, supporting, organising, planning, facilitating and promoting a new, busy inter-disciplinary research centre.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-395 media-395\" class=\"image align-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 539px;height: 303px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/wolfsonyoungpeople\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/586\/2022\/03\/WC-PSG-1.png\" alt=\"A graphic showing the Wolfson Professional Services team\" \/><\/figure>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Youth voices<\/h2>\n<p>An integral part of the Wolfson Centre\u2019s ethos is ensuring the voices of young people are at the heart of the work we do.<\/p>\n<p>Since the inaugural meeting of our Youth Advisory Groups in September 2021, we have had the pleasure of working closely with young people themselves who inform and guide the Centre\u2019s research aims and priorities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-392 media-392\" class=\"image align-none\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/wolfsonyoungpeople\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/586\/2022\/03\/a-young-woman-laughs-at-her-laptop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Empowering young people, particularly young women, to make their voices heard is really important to us.
