Hope you are settling into the spring semester.

Friday 1 March is St David’s Day, celebrated across Wales. It’s a time to learn more about Welsh heritage, celebrate traditions, and come together as a community living and studying in Cardiff.

I’d like to wish you all Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus (a happy St David’s Day). One of the themes this year is random acts of Welshness. Having Cardiff as your place to study offers plenty of opportunities to experience Welsh culture – from learning Welsh, trying a Welsh cake, visiting one of the museums or even one of my favourites – watching a rugby game! I enjoyed reading more ideas from your Student Champions. Join celebration events in your school and around campus.

In the spring semester, we are continuing to speak to students and staff about what Cardiff University should look like in the future. This is an opportunity to think big and be different. From Y Sgwrs Fawr (the Big Conversation) feedback so far, you’ve said you want the university to be inclusive, supportive, diverse, and sustainable. Our student panels have emphasised the value of the in-person experiences you get from campus, whilst also wanting to see more virtual and hybrid learning available for when it suits you.

Your feedback has helped to develop 3 possible futures for our university and, in March we’ll be stepping into the year 2035 and exploring what the university of the future might look like. Look out for opportunities to get involved – there will be an exhibition in the Centre for Student Life, our Vice-Chancellor, Wendy Larner, is running a series of seminars and there will be a panel event in partnership with the Students’ Union where you can give your feedback and join in the discussion.

Whilst I’ve got you thinking about the future, it’s a good time to let you know that the paid on-campus internship opportunities are now live. This is a great chance to gain work experience with some of our amazing staff across a huge variety of teams.

Best wishes,
Claire
