  • Professor Ruedi Allemann, the new PVC for Physical Sciences and Engineering, was welcomed to his first UEB.
  • It was noted that Professor Damien Murphy had been appointed as acting Head of Chemistry.
  • It was noted that Dr Tom Hall had been appointed as the new Head of the School of Social Sciences.
  • It was noted that Cardiff Council had signed off the Section 106 for the Centre for Student Life meaning that the enabling works could now begin.
  • It was noted that the University’s Brexit blog had been launched with academic content of what Brexit means for Wales.
  • The Vice-Chancellor’s recent visit to Namibia and high-level meetings held with two Permanent Secretaries and the Deputy Prime Minister was noted.
  • UEB received the Welsh Government remit letter 2017/18 and noted that, as expected, there would be a funding shortfall in 2017/18.
  • UEB received a paper on EU recruitment strategy. The paper outlined current EU student recruitment performance, strategy, operations and resources and the current thinking on a new post-Brexit EU recruitment strategy.
  • UEB received a paper on degree apprenticeships which highlighted the opportunities in terms of increasing student recruitment and strategic partnerships with companies and industry offered by degree apprenticeships and concern over the lack of confirmation from Welsh Government on how they would fund undergraduate and higher level apprenticeships. It was agreed to establish a task and finish group, chaired by Professor Holford, to further explore opportunities in the area of degree apprenticeships.
  • UEB received a summary on the new DLHE survey.
  • UEB reviewed the Brexit register, this paper will now go on to Policy and Resources Committee and Council for note.
  • UEB received the revised Research Integrity paper.
