He completed his Masters research project in 2010 with <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/chemistry.st-andrews.ac.uk\/staff\/ads\/group\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professor Andrew Smith<\/a><\/span>, investigating Lewis base catalysed acyl transfer processes.<\/p>\n<p>Staying at St Andrews, he completed his PhD under the direction of <a href=\"http:\/\/chemistry.st-andrews.ac.uk\/staff\/ads\/group\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Professor Andrew Smith<\/span><\/a>, producing a thesis entitled \u201c<em>Organocatalytic Functionalisation of Carboxylic Acids Using Isothioureas<\/em>\u201d, funded by a prestigious Carnegie-Caledonian Scholarship (2010-2014). This work expanded the utility of isothioureas in Lewis base catalysis, demonstrating the first <em>intermolecular<\/em> bond-forming reaction of carboxylic acid-derived C(1)-ammonium enolates.<\/p>\n<p>For his postdoctoral research (and a change in weather!), he moved to UC Berkeley to join the research group of <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cchem.berkeley.edu\/rsgrp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professor Richmond Sarpong<\/a><\/span>, entering the world of complex molecule synthesis.
