In addition to providing one-to-one Counselling and Wellbeing support, the Counselling, Health and Wellbeing Service provide a number of one-off workshops, taught courses (running between 2-4 weeks) and groups to help tackle the difficulties students may face.

Workshops are a way to get information and strategies to overcome your difficulties. In addition to workshops, our courses and groups offer you a safe and confidential space to explore issues, share concerns and develop new skills over the course of several weeks.

Workshops

Tuesday 4 April 11:00 – 12:00, Sir Donald Walters Boardroom, Students’ Union
Wannabe Well: Wake up your Wellbeing – We will explore what Wellbeing is and the importance of improving emotional, mental and physical Wellbeing. We will then focus on strategies you can use to strike a good balance, look after yourself and improve your wellbeing.

Wednesday 12 April 15:00 – 16:30, Sir Donald Walters Boardroom, Students’ Union
Mood Booster: Managing Low Mood and Depression – This workshop is aimed at helping people cope with low mood and symptoms of depression. We will explore strategies for improving low mood, including ways to manage negative patterns of thinking, ways to deal with difficult emotions and ways to change unhelpful behaviour.

Wednesday 19 April, 11:00 – 12:30, Sir Donald Walters Boardroom, Students’ Union
Breathe: Managing Anxiety and Stress – This workshop runs each term and is aimed at helping you manage anxiety and stress. We will explore what anxiety and stress look like and how they are maintained and  then focus on strategies you can use to manage anxiety and stress.

Dealing with Exam Anxieties – This workshop will teach you effective strategies to gain control over your anxiety, enabling you to concentrate and think clearly when studying for and sitting your exams. *please note this workshop can also be signed up to via the Students’ Union website

Wednesday 19 April 14:00 – 15:00, Room 302, Students’ Union
Uni Om: Desk Yoga for Students – Feeling stressed when you’re studying? This one-hour workshop will help you revitalise, re-focus and relax. It includes mindfulness practice, desk asanas (yoga moves you can do at your desk) and wellbeing skills based on yogic philosophy.

Tuesday 25 April, 17:30 – 18:30, via Blackboard Collaborate
Managing Social Anxiety ONLINE – This workshop will help you to understand the process that leads you into, and maintains, your social anxiety. You’ll be taught techniques and strategies to challenge and regain control over your anxious thoughts.  (please know that we will send you a link prior to the workshop start time and the session will be delivered via webcam)

Friday 28 April, 14:30 – 15:30, Sir Donald Walters Boardroom, Students’ Union
Feel Good Factor – The aim of this workshop is to help you to develop skills and techniques that will enhance your self-esteem and increase your confidence.

Courses

Take ACT-ion – This 3 week Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) course aims to help you learn how to take positive action and free yourself from the traps and barriers of life, and see what you really want your life to be. Take ACTion on understanding more about how your mind works. Accept the things you can’t control. Make a commitment to do what you CAN do to improve your life – Tuesday 25 April, 17:30 – 19:00.  Details of how to book can be found on the Student Intranet.

Wellbeing Peer Support Group – The Wellbeing Peer Support Group is a monthly meeting aimed at offering students a space to talk with other students about how they are feeling and a safe space to talk about ways of coping with things that you are struggling with.

Postgraduate Peer Support Group – The Postgraduate Peer Support group provides peer support to Postgraduates with finding the right balance in their study and research.

Tuesday 11 April, 17:30 – 19:00, Training Room, 51 Park Place
Postgraduate Peer Support Group – The Postgraduate Peer Support group provides peer support to Postgraduates with finding the right balance in their study and research.

Wednesday 26 April, 15:30 – 17:00, Room 3.02, Students’ Union
The Chat Lounge – A meet-up point for students who are studying without support from, and are estranged from, their families and/or have been in care. This is a safe, informal space for you to meet other students with similar experiences and to build up a friendship support network.

Long term support group – This is a support group offered at Cardiff University for students who are experiencing emotional difficulties and would like extra support on an ongoing basis. Being in a group setting, you will get the opportunity to learn from others, listen to different perspectives on similar challenges you are going through, and see how others are coping – for booking details please see our Student Intranet pages.

Walking to Wellbeing

Wednesdays 14:00 – 15:00 from the 26 April
Fancy joining us for a walk? Here is a great way to enhance your wellbeing and improve your health, meet some like-minded people, get some exercise and fresh air and take in some of the beautiful sights around Cardiff.  Exercise is extremely important for our physical and mental wellbeing. Such enhancements in wellbeing may be just what you need for boosting your studies or helping you get a better night’s sleep!  The walks will take place every Wednesday at 14:00 – meet us on the steps of the Students’ Union, Park Place.

 

Additional Support Services

Taith

The Drug and Alcohol Advice and Support Organisation, Taith, run a confidential student service once a month at our offices at 50 Park Place, on Tuesday evenings from 17:00 – 19:00. On the first Tuesday of every month, Taith will offer one-to-one bookable appointments to provide confidential, specialised support, advice and information in a safe place. They will next be here on Tuesday 4 April from 17:00 – 19:00  Please click here to book an appointment with Taith or you can contact them directly on 0300 300 7000 (option 1) or email Taith@cgl.org.uk

Rainbow Bridge

Rainbow Bridge is a project run by Victim Support, offering advice, support and information to victims of domestic abuse who identify as LGBT+. Rainbow Bridge exists to provide LGBT+ abuse victims with the specialist support they deserve. Services can be accessed directly, securely and confidentially, so that victims of LGBT+ domestic abuse do not need to go to the police if they do not wish to.

On the last Tuesday of every month, Rainbow Bridge will offer one-to-one bookable appointments to provide confidential, specialised support, advice and information in a safe place. They will next be here on Tuesday 25 April.  Four slots are available: 17:30, 18:00, 18:30, 19:00.  Please note: Slots must be booked by 17:00 the day before this appointment (Monday).

Your Student Life, Supported.
