Preparing for your future, What's On

The best bits of the Autumn Careers Fair by Emma Green

Winter may have arrived in Cardiff but the rain wasn’t enough to stop hundreds of Cardiff students heading to City Hall for the autumn careers fair on Tuesday!

With over sixty exhibitors there was something for everyone, notable names included: Network Rail, DCC, Marks and Spencers, Bloomberg, Microsoft and EY to name just a few. Exhibitors came from as far as Ohio to encourage Cardiff students to apply for their exciting schemes. Each stall was packed with information, advice and plenty of freebies.

As well as top employers there were representatives from the voluntary sector, advice for students considering postgraduate study and an insight into studying abroad. There were also talks throughout the day put on specifically for Cardiff students to help prepare them for when they graduate.

The fair proved to be a really successful and enjoyable day that saw students leaving with large bags stuffed full of leaflets, books, torches, portable phone chargers and enough chocolate to feed even the hungriest housemates.

Speaking with students after the event, many claimed to have had their eyes opened to the vast number of graduate schemes on offer – there really is something for everyone!

Han Siah, business student, explained that: “Being a third year student I’m feeling the pressure as graduation is fast approaching. The careers fair gave me a great insight into all the options available and the chance to network with different company representatives about roles that I am now excited to apply for”.

Ben Babcock, postgraduate, also agreed that his experience of the fair was “very useful and will really help me when looking for jobs”.

With deadlines for graduate schemes fast approaching, students need to be thinking about what they want to do after they graduate. The prospect of life beyond university can be daunting but have no fear; the Cardiff Careers and Employability service are running a range of talks and fairs throughout the autumn semester to give you all the advice you need. Best wishes

Emma.
