How to get the best out of attending the Science Careers Fair

With the upcoming Science Careers Fair taking place, fair sponsors PCI Pharma share their top tips on how to make the most of the careers fair.

PCI Pharma Services Labs

Here are our top 5 tips:

  1. Don’t rule us out

Yes, we are a Pharmaceutical company, but it’s not all about recruiting scientists (although they are important too).  Any company is more than their key output, whether they specialise in construction, law, engineering or pharmaceuticals they need other supporting activities within their organisation.  We have IT, engineering, finance, project management, HR and other departments; all are required to support us in being a successful business.  Also we don’t run a formal graduate programme but we still need graduates; it’s all about a good mix of staff, so don’t rule us out.

  1. Ask us questions, but the ‘right’ questions

We encourage staff from across our organisation to support careers events.  We will happily talk about working for PCI and what our business does.  We will do our best to answer all of your questions, but we aren’t careers experts – we can’t tell you the best next step for your career, only what would be beneficial from our business perspective.

  1. It’s all about the networking

Careers events provide the perfect opportunity to network with prospective employers. They help gain a better understanding of what they look for when recruiting, what development opportunities they may have and what it’s like to work for the business.  Networking should be one of the key aims of anyone attending a careers event.

  1. You will be surprised who or what we remember from careers events

Some of our staff attend multiple careers events.  We will talk to lots of students throughout the day, but rest assured there will be people who stand out – we still remember students who we met at careers events last year.  This is your first opportunity to make a good impression with an employer who you may wish to work for in the future.  Staff who attend careers events may well be involved in the recruitment of staff too, so make sure you stand out for the right reasons.

  1. Recruit for attitude, train for skill

We know that new graduates don’t have all the skills we need – just like any other new employee (no matter how much experience they have).  What we are looking for is a positive attitude, a can-do approach and a will to learn and develop. if you have the right attitude we will train you in the right skills.
