Top ratings for social science research<\/strong><\/p>\n

The UK\u2019s first social science research community \u2013\u00a0SPARK<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 is producing internationally leading work, according to the latest Research Excellent Framework (REF) assessment.<\/p>\n

REF 2021<\/a>\u00a0is the UK\u2019s system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions.<\/p>\n

A breakdown of recent REF 2021 results shows institutes, groups and centres in the Social Science Research Park collective are among those producing 100% 4* research impact.<\/p>\n

Professor Chris Taylor<\/a>, Academic Director, SPARK, said: \u201cOutstanding REF results across the board for our member groups strengthen SPARK\u2019s rationale as a centre for social science research-led innovation, and add impetus to our recent, collective move to sbarc|spark \u2013 a bespoke environment where we design, develop and test social science research-led solutions to tackle the most pressing issues facing society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two centres \u2013\u00a0CASCADE<\/a>\u00a0(the Children\u2019s Social Care Research and Development Centre) and\u00a0WISERD<\/a>\u00a0(the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research and Data) \u2013 contributed to the University\u2019s\u00a0education research submission<\/a>, ranking third across the UK for its quality of research.<\/p>\n

Both were also recognised for their impactful research, achieving the highest possible score of 4.0 for research impact.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations<\/a>\u00a0(CAST) is a hub for understanding the social science of climate action. It formed part of Cardiff\u2019s REF return for\u00a0Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience<\/a>, confirming Cardiff as 7th<\/sup>\u00a0in the UK (out of 93).<\/p>\n

Cardiff\u2019s\u00a0Sociology return<\/a>\u00a0ranked the University 10th<\/sup>\u00a0in the UK and 5th for research environment. The assessment included\u00a0DECIPHER<\/a>\u00a0(the Centre for Development, Evaluation, Complexity and Implementation in Public Health Improvement),\u00a0HateLab<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Crime and Security Research Institute.<\/a><\/p>\n

Professor Taylor added: \u201cOur SPARK research contributed to\u00a0seven\u00a0<\/em>units of assessment in the REF demonstrating the wide interdisciplinary nature of our staff, member institutes and groups. For example, the Centre for Innovation Policy Research contributed to submissions for\u00a0Geography and Environmental Studies<\/a>,\u00a0Business and Management<\/a>, and Sociology.\u201d<\/p>\n

We are a top 20 university in the UK for the overall quality of our research (19th) impact (11th) and environment (16th)14th in the UK for Research Power which demonstrates the scale and quality of our research<\/p>\n
