The research\u00a0includes the use of the state-of-the-art climate (MM5) and oceanographic (POLCOMS\/PRoWAM) computer models, to study the interaction and transformation between the atmospheric conditions, sea states including waves, tides and storm surge, and the risk of coastal and estuarine flooding and erosion. Comparative model studies will be carried out at the sites both in China and UK, with scenarios of future climate change. The research results are used to assess the impacts of climate change on the microclimate in the coastal zones, risk of coastal flooding and erosion in the area, which will affect the regional social and economic developments. It is expected that this project will lead to further collaboration between the host and home institutes in this and other research areas with common research interests.<\/p>\r\nThis project was supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering under “Research Exchanges with China and India” major award to host Dr Xiaojing Geng from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.<\/p>\r\n
