Welcome to my research blog, which is intended to provide you with information related to my academic activities, in particular my research activities.

I started my research career on coastal engineering at University of Liverpool over 20 years ago, and have continued at Plymouth University and currently at Cardiff University. I am Professor of Coastal Engineering, Director of Hydro-environmental Research Centre (HRC), and Co-director of EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training on Water Informatics, Science and Engineering (WISE-CDT) at Cardiff University.

My research interests are on physical and numerical modelling of coastal & estuarine processes, particularly related to offshore sandbanks, inlet/lagoon systems, nearshore coastal defense structures, beach nourishment and, in recent years, modelling of large-scale waves/tides/surge prediction under extreme conditions, resource characterization for marine renewable energy and the impact of climate change on coasts and estuaries.

Since 2000, I have been Principal Investigator or Co-investigator for some 22 research projects funded by various sources secured more than £3m research funds, and have published more than 120 papers in international journals and conferences. My current Google Scholar h-index is 24 with over 2300 citations. I received the Halcrow Prize from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in 2007.

Currently, I am a member of the EPSRC peer-review college, Associate Editor of Frontiers in Marine Science and Water Science and Engineering (WSE – 水科学与水工程), and a member of the editorial board of China Ocean Engineering. I am an Environmental Partner member of CIWEM. Previously, I served in the editorial board of the ICE Maritime Engineering Journal (2009-2012) and was a Visiting Research Scientist at National Oceanography Center (formerly Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory in Liverpool).

Over the past decades, I have developed strong international research collaborations and have been frequently invited to give lectures in China, Taiwan and Japan. I have been acting as an external examiner for PhD candidates in the UK and overseas universities, and regularly reviewing research proposals for the UK and overseas research councils, as well as for a wide range of international journals.

I am currently leading a research team on Coastal Research @ Cardiff.
