Our project focuses on everyday spaces of second-hand culture \u2013 from our homes, to charity shops, freecycle message boards, makers\u2019 and resellers\u2019 workshops, and all the way to the local tip.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">However, challenges persist for second-hand cultures, too. For example, we may encounter issues of waste, barriers to repair, labour problems, and community welfare concerns. What\u2019s more, opportunities for people to connect to share ideas and problem-solve around these issues have been relatively rare.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-105\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/secondhandcultures\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/585\/2022\/01\/WasteReuse_Use-this-one-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/secondhandcultures\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/585\/2022\/01\/WasteReuse_Use-this-one-1.png 1080w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/secondhandcultures\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/585\/2022\/01\/WasteReuse_Use-this-one-1-624x624.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In order to address this, we will be launching a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">series of four free online workshops<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in 2022 exploring challenges to second-hand cultures. We will be bringing together various experts and other stakeholders in this field who are already thinking about\u202fand working towards a more sustainable, skilled, fair, and community-based second-hand economy. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This series will include explorations of \u201csecond-hand\u201d <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">work, waste, repair and reuse<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, as well as ideas about how we might extend these values and practices into our <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">communities<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Following our <a href=\"https:\/\/festivalofsocialscience.com\/events\/extending-the-lives-of-our-things-reuse-and-repair-workshop\/\">in-person waste and reuse event in November 2021<\/a> \u2013 which took place as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/festivalofsocialscience.com\/\">ESRC and Cardiff University Festival of Social Science<\/a> \u2013 we will start the series with a workshop exploring the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">concept of waste, and existing innovative waste management practices. <\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We will hear multiple lightning talks from <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">academics<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">other practitioners<\/span><\/b> <span data-contrast=\"none\">who are already thinking about waste and\/or working on innovative ways of reusing it within the second-hand economy.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In order to explore processes of waste and reuse, we propose that we work with the assumption that <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">waste is only waste <\/span><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">if we allow it to be<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Indeed, Kevin Lynch (1981) explained that waste is largely defined by the fact that it is <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">not used.<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In order to bring these abstract concepts to life, we will delve into <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">practical activities of reuse<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. This will involve spending time with everyday materials and objects that are often discarded, exploring new ways of reusing these materials.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Together, through <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">hands-on collaborative problem-solving informed by existing practice and research<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, we hope that we can begin to effectively eliminate\u202fwaste\u202fand generate new ideas to move forward. Our aim is for everyone to leave with an idea or action to take back with them to try out in their own organisations and projects.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Drawing on the ideas generated in the workshops, we hope to build stronger connections and networks among people working on waste in secondhand economies.
