Matthew completed his BSc Computer Science at Cardiff University before attaining a PGT Scholarship and returning as a postgraduate on the MSc Advanced Computer Science programme.
Can you tell us a little bit about the programme in your own words?
The aim of the programme is to get us familiar with more advanced topics within computer science that would not normally be covered within an undergraduate degree due to the amount of theory in them. In addition, the programme focuses on the research and theoretical aspects in computer science and a lot of our coursework requires us to critically analyse academic papers to form our conclusions (and even occasionally create novel solutions)
What did the Postgraduate Taught Scholarship mean to you?
Without it I would not have been able to afford to do this course. Given that I’ve wanted to do this course since before starting my undergraduate that would’ve been extremely disappointing! So, no, it hasn’t meant drinks are always on me.
Have you been able to secure funding from other places, how else are you supporting your studies?
I work for the school of Computer Science by assisting in the labs.
What were your motivations for undertaking a postgraduate degree?
I’ve always wanted to learn about computer security and the Masters programme provided me with that opportunity as it is heavily focused on cyber security. In addition, I want to see if I prefer academics and research side of things as opposed to working in the commercial world. Therefore, if I enjoy the research aspect of this Masters, I will probably consider doing a PhD and, if not, I’ll look for a job in Cyber Security.
Why did you decide to do your postgraduate degree at Cardiff?
Cardiff offered the modules in the area within Computer Science that interests me most. Furthermore, I had done my undergraduate degree here and was quite comfortable with the lecturers and the environment.
What do you think of Cardiff as a place to live as a postgraduate?
Cardiff is a brilliant place to live! Despite being a small city, it is packed full of a huge variety of shops and there is always something going on. There’s enough to do in Cardiff to make doing a degree unfeasible.
Has studying for a postgraduate degree at Cardiff University lived up to your expectations so far?
Yup. Although I was hoping for slightly more freebies on starting my postgraduate course (Where are my free vouchers?!)!
