During the training session the teachers were given an opportunity to practise activities from the Universe-in-a-Box astronomy education toolkit and each topic was covered in more depth that in the toolkit\u2019s activity book alone with additional topics including tidal locking, the scattering of light and distances in space.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop also provided an opportunity for teachers ask any astronomical questions they had to the scientists hosting the session,<\/p>\n<figure class=\"Image pull-right\"><div id=\"attachment_960\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" ><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/236\/2014\/04\/DSCF4751.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-960\" alt=\"Activities at the first Universe in the Classroom full-day CPD in March 2014\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/236\/2014\/04\/DSCF4751-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/236\/2014\/04\/DSCF4751-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/236\/2014\/04\/DSCF4751-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/236\/2014\/04\/DSCF4751-624x468.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/236\/2014\/04\/DSCF4751.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Activities at the first Universe in the Classroom full-day CPD in March 2014<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<p> but the main benefit was likely the sharing of best practise and ideas between the teachers in attending who were all given the opportunity towards the end of the day to plan a lesson utilising the free resources provided to them during the workshop.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the session, each school was awarded a free Universe-in-a-Box toolkit and activity book, an inflatable Earth ball and accompanying activity book and a children\u2019s storybook called <i>\u201cWhere is Spacey\u2019s Planet?\u201d, <\/i>to take back to their school.<\/p>\n<p>There will be similar CPD events held at the School of Physics and Astronomy on 8<sup>th<\/sup> April and 6<sup>th<\/sup> May with more in planning for the next academic year.
