{"id":551,"date":"2014-02-05T15:30:55","date_gmt":"2014-02-05T15:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/?p=551"},"modified":"2016-11-16T12:57:35","modified_gmt":"2016-11-16T12:57:35","slug":"inspiring-science-teachers-in-aberystwyth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/2014\/02\/05\/inspiring-science-teachers-in-aberystwyth\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspiring Science Teachers in Aberystwyth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of January I visited <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aber.ac.uk\/en\/sell\/pgce\/science\/\">Aberystwyth University<\/a> to help give the PGCE secondary science trainee teachers there a flavour of the resources available for teaching astronomy. This is the second year the PGCE Physics tutor, David Grace, has invited me to talk to his group, and it&#8217;s been very rewarding both times.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The PGCE students are training to teach secondary science, with only a few out of a class of about 20 having a physics background. David&#8217;s primary task is to ensure that all of them are able to teach Key Stage 3 physics, whether their undergraduate degree was in physics or biology.<\/p>\n<p>As well as intending to promote our <a title=\"Inspiring Science Education\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/inspiring-science-education\/\">Inspiring Science Education<\/a> project, I went with a list of activities I wanted to show during the course of the morning session, from <a title=\"Star in a Box\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/resources\/star-in-a-box\/\">Star in a Box<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chromoscope.net\">Chromoscope<\/a>. As well as that, however,\u00a0a relatively amount of the time was spent on a general astronomy Q&amp;A. After all, having spent some time in a school already, the PGCE students have heard a whole range of questions from students, some of which are really hard to answer.<\/p>\n<p>Once the questions started, there was certainly no holding them back!\u00a0There were questions about what a black hole is, and how to explain the expansion of the Universe, as well as questions about the Sun and planets.
