Pyle<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<p>As of August 2016, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.astro.cf.ac.uk\/contactsandpeople\/?page=full&amp;id=493\">Dr Chris North<\/a> has\u00a0held an STFC Public Engagement Fellowship. The Fellowship, titled &#8220;The Dawn of Gravitational Wave Astronomy&#8221;,\u00a0is incredibly timely given the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ligo.caltech.edu\/detection\">recent<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ligo.caltech.edu\/news\/ligo20160615\">results<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ligo.org\">LIGO<\/a> experiment &#8211; in which the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.astro.cf.ac.uk\/research\/gravity\/\">Gravitational Physics<\/a> group here in Cardiff were heavily involved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">On 14<sup>th<\/sup> September 2015 the LIGO experiment made the first ever direct detection of gravitational waves \u2013 the last unverified prediction of Einstein\u2019s General Theory of Relativity. This marked the dawn of gravitational wave astronomy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Chris will use his fellowship to develop and deliver educational resources for teachers across the UK to assist with covering LIGO and gravitational waves in lessons. There will also be a series of student masterclasses and workshops. An online app illustrating the workings of a gravitational waves observatory and an interactive, mechanical \u2018Lego LIGO\u2019 for use in events and exhibitions, will also be produced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">As part of this fellowship, we aim to\u00a0run\u00a0student masterclasses and teacher CPD sessions\u00a0relating to gravitational waves, and their use in the classroom.
