Science and technology have both quenched and further intensified our curiosity about the Universe. We are on an eternal mission to try to explain the \u201cimpossible\u201d and explore the boundaries of our knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>2016 signifies an important year during which some seemingly impossible things have been made possible \u2013 humans lived in space for almost a year and scientists discovered gravitational waves: ripples in the fabric of spacetime \u2013 proving to us time and again how the power of science can enable us to achieve the seemingly impossible.<\/p>\n<p>The School of Physics and Astronomy\u2019s Dr Edward Gomez, Professor Haley Gomez and Sarah Eve Roberts were invited to Hong Kong last week to showcasing examples of \u201cimpossible to possible\u201d science to families and students at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishcouncil.hk\/en\/programmes\/education\/science\/science-alive\">Science Alive 2016.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The team were invited to Hong Kong by the British Council. Science Alive is jointly organised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishcouncil.hk\/en\">British Council<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/hk.science.museum\/\">Hong Kong Science Museum<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edb.gov.hk\/en\/\">Education Bureau<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hkedcity.net\/\">Hong Kong Education City Limited<\/a>, and sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croucher.org.hk\/\">Croucher Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Every year for the past 23 years, Science Alive has invited leading UK academics and communicators in various fields of science to engage Hong Kong\u2019s students, teachers and the public in activities that promote a wider understanding of science.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image pull-right\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/236\/2016\/03\/hk-fest1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1942 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/236\/2016\/03\/hk-fest1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"hk fest1\" width=\"290\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/236\/2016\/03\/hk-fest1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/236\/2016\/03\/hk-fest1-254x338.jpg 254w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/236\/2016\/03\/hk-fest1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/physicsoutreach\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/236\/2016\/03\/hk-fest1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>This year was the turn of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.astro.cf.ac.uk\/\">Cardiff University School of Physics and Astronomy<\/a>. During the weekend we delivered a variety of drop-in activities and science walk-about shows, inviting families to listen to black holes while playing Black Hole Hunter, see themselves in invisible infrared light and build an exo-planet system with LittleBits.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image pull-right\">\n<figure class=\"image\">\n<figure class=\"image\"><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<p>On Monday we hosted student workshops for junior secondary students from local schools on \u2018Red Dwarfs and Blue Supergiants: the life and times of stars\u2019. The workshop invited students to use <a href=\"http:\/\/starinabox.lcogt.net\/\">Star-in-a-Box<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/lcogt.net\/\">LCOGT\u2019s robotic telescopes<\/a> to explore the entire life-cycle of stars, from dramatic birth to violent end, and discover what a star\u2019s mass can reveal about its past and its future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was once believed that the Sun orbited the Earth and a human walking on the moon was nothing but a daydream.
