Universe Awareness

unawe_logoUniverse Awareness (UNAWE) is an international astronomy education project that aims to use the awe-inspiring Universe to capture the imagination of young children aged between 4 and 11 years, and create a stepping-stone to introduce them to science and technology at the most important time in their development and education. The project focuses on four core tasks: co-ordinating an international network of astronomers, educators and communicators; teacher training; creating astronomy educationresources; and evaluation.

The network is available for use by both professional and citizen science, including telescope time for schools and a range of educational and citizen-science projects.

The telescope network currently includes two 2-meter telescopes, sited in Hawaii and eastern Australia, and nine 1-meter telescopes, sited in ChileSouth Africaeastern Australia and Texas. The telescopes are all instrumented with optical imagers, and the 2-meter telescopes also have low-dispersion optical spectrographs.
