Public Involvement Opportunity

27 September 2017

Would you like to help inform the research that we do in the School of Pharmacy in Cardiff University?

If so, read on………

The School of Pharmacy in Cardiff is involved in research related to health and wellbeing. The research activities of staff in the school aim to understand more about diseases with a view to improving diagnosis of these conditions and/or improving treatment.

We would like individuals that are interested in science and health to look at our research ideas and to let us know their thoughts. We are looking for interested members of the public that:

  • are passionate about science and health;
  • have a general interest in research;
  • have good communication, meeting and team working skills;
  • are open to receiving further training and mentoring; and
  • live within the Cardiff or South Wales region.

Three individuals have already been recruited from a national advert. We are now keen to connect with the local community to ensure we get the views of Cardiff residents! Up to three more individuals will become part of this group.

The role of the group (termed a Lay Faculty) would be to advise us on our research priorities and projects and would include tasks such as reviewing new research proposals and lay summaries, which are used to help explain our research to the public. Volunteers will also be invited to attend the School twice a year, for a couple of hours, to meet with University staff and fellow volunteers. Additionally, all volunteers will be welcomed to our Annual Research Day (April) to discover more about the breadth of research that is being done in Cardiff’s School of Pharmacy.

This is a voluntary role for people interested in scientific research that aims to benefit human health. Volunteers will get a rare insight into the research environment and an opportunity to inform the direction of our current and future research activities. You will be required to give approximately 1-2 hours per month via teleconference, skype or e-mail. This is not a paid position but we will cover reasonable travel expenses, subsistence, stationary and other reasonable expenses. Specific needs will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
