Public Engagement Event at the Royal Mint Experience Llantrisant

28 July 2017

Between the 30th July and 5th August 2017 Dr. James Blaxland will be representing Cardiff University, in association with the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB), AMSAT UK and the Barry Amateur Radio Society (BARS) at the Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant. The event invites local school children and members of the public to “The Royal Mint Radio Experience” to enjoy a fun, informal and interactive radio workshop.

Visitors will be able to exchange greeting messages with radio enthusiasts across the world using Morse code, voice and various other data modes. The target is to contact each of the 100 countries with which the Royal mint has worked with during its 1,000-year history. In addition, on Sunday 30th July and Saturday 5th August, they’ll have the opportunity to send and receive radio signals with FUN-cube-1, an educational satellite launched in 2013 which is used by schools and educational groups around the world.

The event will be open to the public from 11.30 -15.00.

It is hoped that aside from publicizing this technology driven hobby, interaction with local community groups and schools will inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists and communicators into further education and beyond.

RSGB Regional Manager and BARS Chairman Glyn Jones, GW0ANA added: We believe this is the very first time any amateur radio station has been allowed to operate from a Royal Mint anywhere in the world, so it really is a unique occasion!”
