PhD Researcher at Cardiff University launches new Political Party to defend Palestinian Refugees from Trumps Deal of the Century

Cardiff, UK, 26 May 2019

Palestinian PhD researcher Hanin Abou Salem launches the Palestine Party for Palestinian Refugees to defend Palestinian Refugees from President Donald Trump’s Deal of the Century which seeks to strip Palestinians from their refugee status and their right to return to their homes and lands in territories that became part of Israel in 1948.

Existing Palestinian political parties have turned the Palestinian struggle for self-determination and right to return into a struggle for power under occupation. While they are busy struggling for political dominance Israel declared all of Jerusalem the eternal capital of Israel, the Trump Administration moved the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and Israel’s Knesset voted in favour of a Bill that described Israel as “the nation state of the Jewish people,” Jerusalem as the “complete and united… capital of Israel” and the right to national self-determination as “unique to the Jewish People.” The Trump Administration also ended all funding to the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) which serves over 5 million Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank including East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

Trump in collaboration with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to dismantle the UNRWA and transfer the responsibility of Palestinian refugees to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) because the UNHCR has a specific mandate to aid refugees by eliminating their refugee status through the medium of local integration in the host country or resettlement in a third country when return is not possible. If the UNRWA is dismantled Arab countries hosting Palestinian refugees will be forced to integrate Palestinian refugees or agree to their resettlement in other countries. Moreover, most Palestinian refugees who were registered with the UNRWA will find themselves facing a legal limbo because America and Israel will claim that they are not deserving of refugee status.

We foresaw all these developments and warned the Palestinian leadership. We repeatedly asked them to put their destructive political divisions aside and to present a unified political front for the sake of the Palestinian People. We asked them to stop plotting against each other domestically, regionally and internationally. We told them that political parties are made to serve the people and not to be served by the people.  We told them if Palestine is lost, they will have no political seats to fight over. For years we refrained from criticising them publicly or launching an alternative political party in the hope that they will wake up but to no avail.

We can no longer remain silent!

We cannot allow the interest of our people to continue to be undermined by political parties that have placed their party interests over the interests of the Palestinian people.

Palestinian refugees need a political party to represent them and stand up for their rights. Therefore, we are launching the Palestine Party for Palestinian Refugees.

The Palestine Party for Palestinian Refugees is a Palestinian nationalist party that is not affiliated to any global political ideologies or foreign agendas.

The Palestine Party for Palestinian Refugees flag is the flag of the nation not of political parties that have forsaken Palestinian refugees for the sake of their political interests.

The Palestine Party for Palestinian Refugees represents Palestinian Refugees who are not affiliated to any political party.

The Palestine Party for Palestinian Refugees believes that all Palestinian refugees share one ideology and that is to return to their homes and land.

The Palestine Party for Palestinian Refugees will mobilise domestically, regionally and internationally to defend the inalienable rights of Palestinian refugees.

The Palestine Party for Palestinian Refugees will establish a strong partnership with states hosting Palestinian refugees, the international community and the UNRWA to ensure that Palestinian refugees live in dignity and security until they can return safely to their homes.

The Palestine Party for Palestinian Refugees will ensure that the UNRWA survives financially and that its mandate continues to be renewed by the United Nations General Assembly until Palestinian refugees return to their homes and land.

The Palestine Party for Palestinian Refugees calls upon all countries and peoples that stand for justice and peace to join us in our effort to protect Palestinian refugees.
