How to describe what mental health nurses do? That\u2019s a\nchallenging question, and one that underpinned a recent review of the work of\ngraduate and registered mental health nurses, Playing\nOur Part<\/a>. This made the case for the person-centred work of nurses, involving\nthe skilled provision of face-to-face care. More recently, here in Wales a ten\nyear Framework\nfor Mental Health Nursing<\/a> was published on the first-ever Mental\nHealth Nurses Day, 21 February 2019. Included in this document is a series of\ngood practice examples showcasing the innovative work of nurses in practice,\neducation and research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One common feature of the work of all practising mental\nhealth nurses is that what they do involves providing support to people\nexperiencing psychological distress. This can be to adults or children, and can\ninvolve direct help to people experiencing unhelpful or unwanted thoughts or\nfeelings and support to their family or carers. Mental health nurses can be\nfound in a range of settings, including hospitals, health centres, people\u2019s own\nhomes, schools, prisons, and in outreach services for people who are homeless.\nThey may work independently or (more usually) in teams with other mental health\nprofessionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and\noccupational therapists as well as with peer support workers. Mental health\nnurses may find themselves liaising with people in a range of other agencies\nsuch as the police, the charitable or third sector, and with teachers and other\nprofessionals in the education system. In addition to their work as providers\nof direct support to people living with mental health difficulties and their\ncarers, mental health nurses are often found as coordinators\nof care<\/a>. This involves helping people who use services to navigate\ntheir journeys through the health and social care system, making sure that\nplans are kept up-to-date and are regularly reviewed by members of the\ninterprofessional team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those wanting to know more about mental health nursing\nas a career the Royal College of Nursing has produced a helpful short video, Keep\nIt in Mind<\/a>, which offers insights into mental health nursing from a number\nof different perspectives. The organisation Mental Health Nurse Academics UK<\/a>\nhas also produced this guide<\/a>\non becoming a mental health nurse. Here in Cardiff University, the School\nof Healthcare Sciences<\/a> offers a three year undergraduate BN\nHons degree in Mental Health Nursing<\/a>, completion of which leads to\nregistration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research in the School of Healthcare Sciences is organised\nthrough three themes<\/a>,\nand has a strong focus on generating new knowledge to inform improvements in\nhealth care practice and services across the age range. Examples of ongoing mental\nhealth research projects led by or otherwise involving Cardiff mental health\nnurse academics include a new study, funded by the National Institute of Health\nResearch, which is developing\nservices for children and young people with common mental health problems<\/a>\n(Nicola Evans<\/a>)\nand a project synthesising\nthe evidence in the area of end of life care for people with severe mental\nillness<\/a> (Ben Hannigan<\/a>,\nDeborah\nEdwards<\/a>, Paul Gill<\/a>,\nSally Anstey<\/a>).\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dean Whybrow<\/a>\nis completing a doctorate on the health and wellbeing of military veterans, and\nwith Ben Hannigan<\/a>\nis part of a team investigating a novel therapy for\nveterans with post-traumatic stress disorder<\/a>. Ongoing postgraduate\nresearch degrees in the mental health field, involving supervision provided by Cardiff\nmental health nurse academics, include: Alicia\nStringfellow<\/a>\u2019s investigation into the experiences of mothers who\nlive with and care for an adult son or daughter with schizophrenia; Nicola\nSavory<\/a>\u2019s study into perinatal mental health experiences and care; Gavin\nJohn<\/a>\u2019s examination of the risks to education, family and friends for\nyoung people admitted to inpatient mental health services; Bethan\nEdwards<\/a>\u2019 creation of an occupational therapy intervention for people\nwith early dementia; and Fortune\nMhlanga<\/a>\u2019s study of recovery in practice. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"How to describe what mental health nurses do?
