{"id":1276,"date":"2017-09-27T10:48:33","date_gmt":"2017-09-27T10:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/mental-health\/?p=1276"},"modified":"2017-09-27T10:48:48","modified_gmt":"2017-09-27T10:48:48","slug":"mhnr2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cardiff.ac.uk\/mental-health\/mhnr2017\/","title":{"rendered":"#MHNR2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cardiff welcomed delegates to the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcn.org.uk\/news-and-events\/events\/mhnr-2017\">International Mental Health Nursing Research Conference<\/a> (#MHNR2017), which took place at City Hall on September 14<sup>th<\/sup> and 15<sup>th<\/sup> 2017. This was the conference\u2019s first visit to Wales, with the theme for the year being <em>Imagination, Invention and Inquiry<\/em>. Papers were welcomed emphasising the need for new ideas, new research and new ways of providing services. As a curtain-raiser, with the involvement of Andr\u00e9 Tomlin (aka <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mental_Elf\">The Mental Elf<\/a>), keynote speakers took part in a pre-conference streamed webinar which can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OArzo_JCjfc\">still be viewed <\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>#MHNR2017 (which until last year was known as the Network for Psychiatric Nursing Research Conference), was organised jointly by <a href=\"https:\/\/mhnauk.wordpress.com\/\">Mental Health Nurse Academics UK<\/a> (MHNAUK) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcn.org.uk\">Royal College of Nursing<\/a>. It remains the UK\u2019s leading annual event of its kind.\u00a0Chair of the conference steering committee for this year was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/39197-hannigan-ben\">Professor Ben Hannigan<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/healthcare-sciences\">School of Healthcare Sciences<\/a>, who opened proceedings with a welcome address. Across the two days keynote speakers (all of whom were live streamed) were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uclan.ac.uk\/staff_profiles\/joy_duxbury.php\">Professor Joy Duxbury<\/a>, who drew on her programme of research into reducing restrictive practices; <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.linkedin.com\/in\/dr-phil-cooper-mbe-10601528\">Dr Phil Cooper<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Danny_Sculthorpe\">Danny Sculthorpe<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rugbyleaguecares.org\/news\/article\/28\/jimmy-gittins-10th-anniversary\">Jimmy Gittins<\/a> who gave inspirational talks drawing on the personal experience of mental distress and their work with <a href=\"http:\/\/stateofmind.org.uk\/\">State of Mind<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jaywatts.co.uk\/\">Dr Jay Watts<\/a>, who challenged delegates to embrace the idea of trauma-informed care; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychosisresearch.com\/professor-paul-french\/\">Professor Paul French<\/a>, who spoke as one of two inaugural MHNAUK Lecturers on his programme of research into psychosis; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swansea.ac.uk\/staff\/human-and-health-sciences\/allstaff\/m.j.coffey\/\">Dr Michael Coffey<\/a>, the second inaugural MHNAUK Lecturer, who talked about the problem of assessing risk; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucd.ie\/research\/people\/psychology\/drgaryo%27reilly\/\">Professor Gary O\u2019Reilly<\/a> who introduced his research into the use of computer games as a vehicle for the provision of psychological therapies for young people with mental health difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>#MHNR2017 also provided an opportunity for Cardiff academics to showcase their research and engagement activities. Delegates were introduced to the ongoing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncmh.info\/3mdr-treatment-resistant-ptsd\/\">3MDR for treatment resistant post-traumatic stress disorder study<\/a>, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/122802-bisson-jonathan\">Professor Jon Bisson<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/39197-hannigan-ben\">Ben Hannigan<\/a> presented a new analysis from the Collaborative Care Planning Project (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalslibrary.nihr.ac.uk\/hsdr\/hsdr04050\/#\/abstract\">COCAPP<\/a>) of the practice and processes of care coordination, and introduced a paper uniting theory, design and research methods for the study of complex mental health systems. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/39206-evans-nicola\">Dr Nicola Evans<\/a> talked of her work with colleagues in Canada and Australia on benchmarking competencies for mental health nurses working in child and adolescent mental health services, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/39174-stringfellow-alicia\">Alicia Stringfellow<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/39221-stacey-emile-gemma\">Gemma Stacey-Emile<\/a> talked of their work promoting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/community-gateway\/our-projects\/healthy-and-active-grangetown\/mental-health\">mental health and wellbeing in Grangetown through the Community Gateway<\/a> project. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/39149-hyde-john\">John Hyde<\/a> presented his research into the boundaries between community mental health teams and crisis resolution and home treatment services.<\/p>\n<p>Planning for #MHNR2018 will begin shortly, with updates available via the conference <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mhnrconf\">twitter account<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cardiff welcomed delegates to the 23rd International Mental Health Nursing Research Conference (#MHNR2017), which took place at City Hall on September 14th and 15th 2017.
